I had a few as a kid (Kyosho) and looking to get back into it, but not drop thousands of dollars. Mainly something fun to show my two year old, and maybe he'll enjoy it at some point also.

I saw a Kyosho RB6 for sale locally, priced at $200. Is that something decent? I hear that lipo batteries are a "must", but not sure if that's actually true or not.

What else should I look at?

I own a Traxxis it is quite good, all wheel drive truck gas powered that goes up to 45 mph. The nitro exhaust sound might be favorable to BMW enthusiasts. If you prefer electric, make sure to get one with a brushless motor, not sure if they've done away with brushed motors these days.

What exactly do you want, a road car or an off-road truck? Off-road is more versatile, but buggies are also started to get really popular because they hug the road and pretty damn hard to tip over.

I have a Losi XXX Short course truck, 2wd with a Mamba brushless motor. It can probably reach about 60mph when I max out the cpu, but it has multiple levels that you can run it at, beginner mode for your kid for example.

A decent RTR setup will run anywhere from $200 - $350, depending what you get. If you spend around $300-$350, you could get an RTR kit AWD that probably has a brushless motor. If whatever you buy has a brushed motor, any LiPo battery that you run on it will kill the motor in no time just because of how much power those batteries expel. That's only the starting cost though, typically you'll want two to three batteries (Get good batteries, they're worth it) around $40-$60 each, then you'll need a charger and balancer. There are cheaper models that might be around $80 range, but the charge times are longer and usually only have one access port. Larger balancers can sometimes charge up to 4 batteries at once.

I've always been a Traxxas (Nitro trucks), Team Associated (TC3 road race electric cars), and Losi buggies / short course trucks. So if you have questions feel free to ask.

Honestly though, they're a riot. I used to go to the indoor track with my buddy, his daughter, and my old man when I lived in MI. The initial cost up front is kind of a lot, but after that you pretty much just have to buy tires and spare parts if you crash.

Pick up an RC-10 RTR. I was into RC off road racing when I was younger, and had my share of Tamica and then Kyosho (Ultima Carbon) buggies. I got back into it a few years ago with my son. I didn't have time to buld, so I grabbed two Team Associated RC-10 ready to run set ups and a couple of extra Li-Pos. It's a blast, they're fast enough to really enjoy in the back yard, at a soccer field, etc. My son digs it. We fix them together after our crashes, etc. There's also a ton of upgrades, so if your son starts getting into it for real, he can swap out just about everything on the car with better parts.

Tower Hobbies is a great place to start your search. Might not be the cheapest, but always has a wide selection

Yeah, Tower hobbies is where I bought my E30 M3, but not an RTR.

Building the car from the ground up was really fun, given the level of detail (the car is 1/10 scale)... The trickiest part was painting the polycarbonate body, since you're painting the inside of the body and applying all those stickers (not decals).

I have a Team Associated TC3 that I built up, over the years. First 2 motors were brushed, then brushless. That motor destroyed the plastic gearing, so I replaced it with metal gears. Snapped the axle a few times. Went through quite a few tires and rims. Think it could do 80ish with a LiPo

Probably spent close to $800 or so on the car + the parts. Fun as hell, tho.

Best to decide if you want to bash in your driveway or take it to a local track.

I 100% recommend lipo's. They are cheaper, lighter and have more capacity. Make sure your charger can balance them as well as charge and the speedo has a voltage cutoff.

The RB6 is a pretty capable race buggy, parts can be hard to find and expensive. Check out TowerHobbies, A-Main Racing or Stormer Hobbies.

Still have 3 Associated cars. Two trucks and one car. The car like you said, is no joke fast. Barely controllable.

Got in to planes which was fun. Have a flying wing LiPo brushless set up with a 4" pusher prop that does over 100 in a dive. Prop sounds crazy at 24000 rpm.

Uncontrollable, but fun as hell. Keeping it straight at full throttle was nearly impossible. But that power and torque made slides easy. Need to fix the axle on it. Miss driving it around.

Tried getting into planes, but never really into them. Got a quadcopter that's fun to fly. Use it survey roofs too. Think I got it up to 850ft or so, before signal interference. Range extender is next upgrade.

Had a Nitro Associated TC3, a Schumacher Fusion and also a Schumacher Menace.

Although nitro costs a bit to keep and maintain, they are much more fun than electric.
