Saw the Giulia in person

Not a fan. And not even cuz I own a M4. The front end is gross. The wheels are hideous. The proportions just don't seem right. Interior was better than I expected from how ugly the exterior was. The car looked better in videos and pictures for sure. I was excited to see one in person, but incredibly disappointed. It just doesn't look "special" to me. Just kinda ugly.....

The spec Chris Harris drove and wrecked on Top Gear looked pretty damn good to me.

You need to see and drive the Quadrifoglio. The regular Giulia is just a family sedan competitor to the regular 3 series.

Go look at a base 320i and it doesn't look very impressive either.

I saw it at the NYC Auto Show last year. I wouldn't say it's "ugly" but I just found it mostly plain looking. Sounds like the mechanicals are spot on but I like the looks of the M3 much more.

I have to agree. All the reviews also mention that it is not a pretty car.

What kills me is that there is no manual transmission available in the US market. I look for a good manual in every sports car.

The Giulia is definitely not a sports car. It's got 4 doors. The Alpha Romeo 4C definitely IS a sports car, but even that didn't get a manual.

+1

OP, did you see the QV or the regular Giulia?

The QV is beautiful while the lower models are just meh.

Sorry I should have said that, it was the quadrifoglio. Just not a fan. Wanted to be, but sorry.... it is ugly.

Beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder. I agree that the regular Giulia is unimpressive but the QV is just plain sexy, inside and out. I saw and sat in a red one with all the options. It was already sold so i didnt get a chance to drive. I love that it has a speed adjustable carbon front splitter, painted carbon hood, painted carbon roof, painted car trunk, and clear carbon spoiler. I have mixed feelings on the 5 hole wheels. The carbon fiber seats are just amazing. As for performanc, every comparison i have seen shows the Giulia QV on top of the M3 comp, C63, ATS-V,... i know it would be my first choice at the ~$85k price point

The e36, e90, and the F80 M3 has 4 doors. So, they're not sports cars?

I'd personally call them "sports sedans". Only because there's no good word in the english language to describe cars with 2 seats (particularly ones with a fixed roof) other than the term "sports car".

Personally, I find them to be gorgeous. Aside from seeing a few at NAIAS, I've seen at least 5-6 trolling around the streets of metro Detroit. I was even able to get up close and personal with a camouflaged model sitting in a parking lot.

The first thing that strikes you is how compact the car is. It seems even smaller than the Lexus IS. In my eyes it's the true successor to the E90.

It was and probably still is a running joke in Texas that a pick up truck is a sports car. I guess it depends. Sports sedan, sports coupe, sports wagon, roadster, and sports cars all have different meaning to me. Definitely sporty two seaters like Corvette, Porsche 911, and Miata are sports cars. Anything with 4 doors or a pick up bed should be called something besides sports car, although the Mustang participates in SCCA "sports car" racing, as does the M2/3.

Well, whatever you call them, if you're talking the normal use scenarios, i.e., freeways, the Giulia is the fastest.

I like the M4 looks the best, but it wouldn't overcome performance gap if I was in the market for a 4 door.

M3 seems to be the all round performer.

in this test it lost every speed battle and not by a little. it might be faster around a track, who knows, but in this test it was a clear loser.

Maybe the Alfa feels more "special" to you due to its rarity, but the F80 is a super nice looking car IMO, especially in Yas Marina Blue. I think it's one of the best looking sedans in the world right now.
