For those who regretted not getting an M3

Interesting review of the E9X M3:

I initially wanted to get an M3 but found a 335i instead at a great price so that's what happened.

Yeh unfortunately the value isn't there. If you want a quick RWD track car the Mustang and Camaro are better and cheaper.

For the street lack of AWD and high redline make it less than ideal.

No regrets. Waiting for an AWD m3!

This guy again. I'm not even going to bother with you.

------

I think the question really comes down to what do you want from your 'sports car'? Are you planning to track it? Do you just want to go fast between stop lights? Do you want to have fun on canyon roads? I can easily name a car in each category that does that specific thing much better, and is cheaper, than the M3, but I would have a harder time naming something that does all of them quite as well as the M while remaining a practical daily driver. Personally I think the maintenance costs are so high that I wouldn't want it as a daily and if its just a weekend car then I would want something more exotic like an F-type.

thats exactly it.. its a good daily driver. it does it all well. its got engine AND chassis. it handles well and has driver feel yet can be comfortable when you're not getting on it.

you said it yourself. are there cars out there that do one particular thing better then the m3 for a better price? yes. but how many combine it all so well?

I dont mean to be an asshole, but I cant stand it when people start bleating about how some shit american car is a better track star then the M3 and then even says that the M3 should be AWD like what

AWD, Automatic transmission (DCT/SMG - same thing), convertible.. Then it's not really an M3 anymore.

335i is probably easier to live with day to day but it's not like a 335i is a low maintenance car either.

Briljant post, its such an Amazing piece of machinery but the people who can afford the maintenance usually just ups their pick in the first place

Man...you should really look at lap times for the Alpha Camaros and what they do to even the NEW M cars.

Alpha chassis > E90 M3 chassis. It's just not even fair....not to mention a push rod V8 that doesn't break the bank to fix AND an "on track" warranty. As long as you do not mod it, it's covered. No contest there.

Even a Zeta 1LE would give it a run for it's money. In terms of a track car you want this:
- Low cost (tires for either are going to be terrible though...)
- Easy to work on
- Reliability (LS or LT VS an aluminum BMW V8)

I cannot speak in terms of Mustangs, I do not think they come close to the on track performance of a Camaro 2016 and on though.

Neither are really comparable though - for one, the M3 is basically a sedan (yeah, I know an E9x comes in a 2 door, but the inside is the same size). The amount of room inside is vastly different between the M3 and the Mustang/Camaro. The visibility is also quite a bit better in a 3 series. It's more of an "all arounder" - you could realistically use an 4 door M3 as a family car, you couldn't do that with a Mustang or Camaro - the back seat is hilariously small. Have fun getting a car seat in and out.

It's not always just about lap times. Same reason MT is still enjoyable - who cares if a DCT is 0.2 seconds faster 0-60? Why does that matter when you're driving to work?

Nice to find someone informed about the performance potential of modern muscle cars. That "muscles cars are only fast in a straight line" crap is getting really old. M4 costs $31,400 more than a Camaro SS and according to Motortrend's data is .1 slower to 60, .1 faster in quarter mile, can handle fewer lateral g's, has the exact same figure 8 time, and only .21 faster on the 1.6 mile road course they tested.

But I digress. Obviously there is more than pure performance to take into account.

I'm sort of glad that I didn't get an M3.

I was originally looking for a used E92 M3 for around $30K but I just couldn't find any that were in decent condition or didn't have over 100K miles on the odometer.

If I want something sportier, I'd probably get a Porsche Cayman.

I haven't watched the video yet but I've owned a DCT E92 M3 for 2.5 years, an LCI E90 for 6 months, and now a. LCI E91 for over a year now. I've owned a bunch of other M3s and M5s too... to me the E92 M3 is a great daily driver. The only thing that bugged me was that it was too great of a daily driver and felt tame. I added springs, sway bars, wheels, exhaust, xpipe, intake and tuning, etc ... it was perfect after that. The only reason I switched out was for a Porsche Turbo. I was going to buy an E90 M3 a few months ago but ended up going a few different directions. To me, it does so many things well. Its great out of the box and no matter how many mods you do to your non-M I just don't feel its nearly that special. Most cars (of all makes) are more biased to do a few things well. I love the E9x M3. Eventually I'll get another one... unless I find my M3 donor and stick everything in my E91.

LMAO! A Camaro SS is going to spank your M3 on the track, straight, anywhere you name it.

And why shouldn't I complain when a tuned S4 is going to spank any M3 like 80% of the time. You should know this living in Canada it's either raining or snowing, not many nice days the M3 simply doesn't have the traction in normal everyday conditions.

Do the M wagon :-) of course, I'm partial. At this point I'm relegated to waiting until they are $5k at the junkyard. Ha!

So much wrong in this thread
Some complain of not having AWD or MT is an end of the world - grow up your babies and start appreciating AWD and AT - it's a convenience and performance combined together. AWD and AT 335 is faster than RWD MT 335. Audi is AWD, Porsche has lots of AWD, many supercars are AWD only. You want RWD and MT? Then go get a best RWD and MT - which is not BMW for sure

Another folks complain about domestic vs european (German) penis contest. Modern muscles care (some of them) can handle turns and they are not that pieces of shit that they used to be.
However, I bought BMW not for mind blowing track times, but for a unique combo of comfort, sport and style all in one - as it was mentioned no other daily driver that can do all that and be a luxury sedan

P.S. I gotta admit tho, even modern muscle cars that are quick on track, even in USA are perceived as a domestic pieces of shit compared to any descent luxury German brand. So no wonder this stigma persists and will probably never disappear - I mean there are Dodge and Chevy and then there's BMW and Mercedes - what else do I need to say?

This stigma is disappearing. Remember when Cadillac put out an ATSV (with a manual might I add) that was better and cheaper than an M3/M4 in pretty much every category (save interior)? Remember when they put out an Alpha chassis that was superior to the F chassis even on the lower level BMW's? Living in the past if you think BMW can stay on top of the American brands without evolving. Right now they're going in the exact wrong direction; they're chasing Lexus instead of sticking to their guns.

Also, no Manual Trans? As soon as I read that, your opinion was immediately voided. You also roll in a grocery getter BMW...so that should tell me as much as I need to know about your mentality. Have fun getting out-gunned by a Civic SI.

There is no doubt this will always hold true. Agreed on M cars just feeling special in general. Each are fun in their own ways though; E90/E82 are getting so cheap it's almost a shame to not mod them out and take them to the track to have some cheap-er fun.

Agree on stigma disappearing, but disagree on manual. I don't care if Civic SI outgun me or not. Besides I'm buying a 335 soon and I'm planing to mod it. I don't think SI will outgun me. And again - 335 AT is faster than 335 MT - you probably missed that part

Lastly, you are talking shit about my car "grocery shopper" heh - look at yourself pal, driving a most ugly 1 series - I wouldn't even come close to your car simply because I don't want to be seen close to it - to not be considered that I own it. I would be ashamed to own such a ugly looking car

Happy now?

Isn't there a theory that the N54 was supposed to be for the M3 but got de-tuned and placed into 335i models because the competition was marketing N/A V8s (C63, RS4/RS5, etc.). So BMW decided to go with the flow and make a 4.0 liter V8 for the M3.

And by now everyone knows what a few bolt-ons and a good tune can do to a N54.

M3 was not available when I ordered my E93 so 335 instead. I am an M3 guy long time multiple M3 owner. I think I am happy with the 335 but the M3 has my heart...

AWD is okay but unnecessary in most cases and automatics are boring and less engaging unless you're talking about DCT also BMW has been making the best RWD manual chassis since the 1930's, E30 M3 for example. American cars like the new camaro zr1 and corvette definitely closed the gap but their late to the game most people don't care about raw driving anymore they just want bells and whistles.
