Remove (standard) steering wheel airbag...help!?
Folks, I apparently have a faulty driver airbag module (per code, seat-sensor contact-cleaning, and finally shop diagnosis): While a fairly adept DIY'er on all five of my bimmers, I have been stymied in removing this E90 steering wheel SRS, to swap the module and clockspring! 'And no...unfortunately this VIN was not a recall candidate
The videos and reading/RealOEM suggested pushing the internal "prongs" with a long shaft screwdriver-torx; seemingly straightforward. First, the two entry-holes appeared plugged (e.g. vinyl not opened 'yet'), then upon insertion, the tool used didn't seem to penetrate to the depth implied on the videos <?>. After fishing around, trying to lever anything that felt like a spring-tension-clip...no joy. Before I attack it again with more vengence, is there any guidance on a best screwdriver or pick, how far the tang should be, etc? So far, I have only succeeded in beginning to tear the vinyl around the access holes. ...THX for any insights! Last edited by moapys; 04-26-2017 at 07:04 AM.. |

Thx, GrayFox...yep; Pelican is always a first go-to
...I'll give it another shot with a slimmer tool; it's possible that the ones used had a bit too much diameter to get "the feel".
Finding a replacement squib-bag and clockspring/slipring is going to be a treat, too - there's a dozen variations of parts depending upon electronics options (sigh). Thinking, at this point, I yank, get p/n's, reassemble and wait for replacements. Otherwise, 'Murphy' will surely send me the wrong clockspring assembly! 'More, as things progress... |

I used a long, thin flathead screwdriver when I did a non-sport conversion.
Took me quite a while. After one side pops loose, you should be able to pry it back far enough to use a flashlight to get a glimpse of what it was you were pushing against to release. After that, it's easy to use that mental image to guide you to pop loose the remaining side. Using that method, the second side goes quickly. |

OP, use some patience and fiddling, you will remove it very easily.
And to find out exact part for your model, check your production date of your car. It should be printed on the driver side door jamb. If you can't find it I think online BMW VIN decoders will also tell you. Then go to realoem.com and choose your model and your production date for your model then look for the part number. |
