Why only sell the 40GB Playstation 3s?

I needed to create this thread to vent. Why do all the major stores (Best Buy, Circuit City, Costco, Walmart, EB, etc) ONLY have the crippled 40GB versions for sale any more? There are sooo many features that are crippled/non existant on this model and yet everyone sells it.

Why aren't the 60GB or 80GB models even offered anywhere any more? WTF?

That's stupid, they're going to lose even more money from people not wanting a crippled PS3.

It also takes away the multimedia card reader and the ability to use any of those cards as memory cards, the built in WiFi, the HDMI capability and it cuts the HD size in half.

All you lose is backward compatability, the memory card reader and 40gigs of space. If the 40 gig didn't have HDMI it'd be a deal breaker, but it does. I honestly haven't played an original Xbox game since the 360 was <6 months old because it didn't have many games before that, it's probably been 2+ years since I needed backwards compatability. As for the card reader it's a game console why do you want to read memory cards? The 40 gigs pisses me off the most. The above being said, I'd have gotten an 80 gig if I could have found it, I don't mind paying more to get more.

Just go buy a harddrive of any size and swap it yourself...I believe it's also in the PS3's manual showing you how to take out the HDD and swap it.

The 80g is coming back in a bundle with a Dualshock 3 controller and Metal Gear Solid 4. It should be out in a month and a half (June 12th or so, the release of MGS4).

Expect it to sell very quickly. MGS4 is one of the most anticipated games of the year.

One article I read said it didn't have HDMI, I'll try to see if I can find the link later..

It also sucks not having the built-in WiFi... The router is nowhere near where I could put the PS3, and I'm not spending extra for it like the 360. I paid over $100 for the WiFi adapter, and it stopped working 3 months later.

I can't really compare between regular Xbox and 360 and the PS2/PS3. It's a big difference for me. The PS2 has modded Guitar Hero capabilities, and I have a ton of games for it. I haven't touched the regular Xbox in 2 years. I know I probably couldnt do that with the PS3, but I still have a ton of PS2 games I could play.

SD cards - two reasons. I was under the impression you could use SD cards to save games like a regular memory card, and I'm getting more and more into photography, so it'd be sweet if I could display my high res pics in HD on the TV.

No deal on the 40GB for me.

I've got a launch 60gb, but I was looking to pick up another one. I wouldve really preferred to get something with ps2 compatability for the sole purpose of playing gt3 and gt4 when the urge calls but you're right, finding an 80 or a 60 is damn near impossible.

Jaaz, do you know how much that bundle is going to cost?

You can transfer files over the network ala remote file server.

i own the 40gb PS3 and it has the built in HDMI and it also has built in WI-FI. I am currently connected wireless.

The only thing the 40gb is lacking is more HD space. I think people are forgetting what 40GB really is. That is alot of space. I dont Install alot of DEMO"S or downloadable games, so the max a game will occupy could be close to 700mb.So i am completly happy with my 40gb, and i dont have the problems that the 60gb has.("freezing")

Yeah, $499 is what I heard. It's a great deal because the game will be $60 obviously and the Dualshock 3 sells for $55, so you are basically getting the 80g console w/ BC for $375 (the 40g is $399).

The biggest problem might be finding one. I would pre-order, if possible.

You could always upgrade the drive in the future with just about any laptop drive. I heard it's a cinch to do.

That's one of the things I love most about the PS3. Sony essentially made it an open platform: Linux, bluetooth, USB ports, universal HDD, etc. I hate it when companies force you to buy their own proprietary over-expensive products just to upgrade or buy a controller for your game system.
