328i rough idle
Hey so I have 2009 328i and today when I was at a red light my car started idling crazy good thing I was only a couple blocks away from my home. I recorded a video does this sound like a vanos solenoid problem?

I have the same problem but it isn't as persistent as your car. Did your car progress over time to its current stage or did the problem start out that bad?

It started fine as I was driving home maybe 15 minutes and then at the lights it just had a rough idle out of the blue. I had the car parked on a really steep hill with the front of the car facing down this really steep hill. My thoughts were maybe it could just need the vanos solenoid cleaned (gonna clean them tomorrow) hope that works because I checked the coil pack and spark plugs and they are all good. That start up in the video was the next day cold start didn't sound that bad the night before

What codes do you have?
Sounds like a misfire. Probably bad coil (not uncommon). You are at 60k miles, so it's very likely. Pull the codes and see what's up. You can replace all 6 coils and plugs for about $150. Use OEM plugs and Bosh or Denso coils. |

Don't own a code reader but seem to have fixed the problem. So I pulled out the intake and exhaust vanos solenoid and cleaned all the oil out and blew it with compressed air and reinstalled them the other way around exhaust into intake and intake into exhaust. Forgot to take a video of pulling them out and cleaning them but here's a video on the start up after cleaning and reinstalling the solenoid.

So I'm thinking from parking front end down that steep ass hill oil filled up in the vanos solenoids and perhaps clogged them up? Because I've never had experienced any kind of rough idle before.

All it was is a 10 mill socket to undo each seloniod and then you just pull them out by hand. I just used some engine cleaner I had but I guess it might have been better to use some brake cleaner instead (not sure which one is better) and used my compressor to blow all the oil and cleaner out.
