Do you shift at ~7k or 6k?
Just been wondering lately because I've been told both. My friend with his 135i ran all the way to 7000 before shifting, but the torque and power plummets at 6000, some people shift at 6000 and I've seen videos of it too, any recommendations?

The dynos tell us the power drops off after 6. Theoretically, if you go past 6 you're making less power but also compare the drop off to where you would be if you shift it.
If you shift at 6k and the revs drop to 4K for example, you gotta look and see if the power being made at 4K is more than the power that drops off after 6. Because if you shift at 7, you shift into a new gear and end up at 4700-5200rpms and therefore are entering the new gear with more power than if you shifted at 6. It's also preference. Like the poster above stated the sound is glorious. But for a race, I would personally bring it to 7 or close to it. |

My Dinan S3 tune recommends 6100 RPM .. I find more power when I shift at 6K vs 7K especially from 1st to 2nd gears.

It's always best to shift a bit after the peak power since your wheel torque is linear to the gear reduction.
1st to 2nd - 43.8% difference between ratios, meaning until your engine torque drops 43.8% from peak, stay in first. (Shift at 7k) 2nd to 3rd - 35% difference between ratios, shift at 6.8k-7k 3rd to 4th 25% difference, shift a bit before 7k, or whenever you lose 25% of peak engine torque. Probably around 6.2-6.5k depending on tuning. etc. etc. This is assuming stock turbos.

I have an auto transmission ... but when I shift into manual, I typically go by engine noise and car feel for the lower gears. I'll just give the the tach a quick glance when shifting into 6th ... which is about 6500 or so.
No matter the car transmission ... I'm never for ragging out gears to get that extra 100 rpm or 2. Clean shifts at the apex for that gear will always be quicker. |
