Test drove an F150

Thinking about buying an airstream so went to test drive a F150. Best feature by far was the A/C ventilated seats that blew cold air in my crotch. Second thing I noticed was the steering was super loose. I think truck guys like to be able to steer with a finger if they wanted to, however coming from the F80 it felt very foreign. Now just gotta decide on the V6 EB or the V8.

Also noticed that the dealer was marking up the shelbys to 99K. Wow.

If you're looking to tow an Airstream, get the EcoBoost. When I first experienced the A/C ventilated seats in my friend's F150 EB, I thought I'd wet myself. It was a hot, humid summer day and he'd turned the A/C 'd seats on without telling me. He and his wife (riding in back, bless her heart) had a healthy chuckle at my reaction.

I'd say get the Ecoboost V6. It seems to do the work very well in the pulling business. Especially if you're just going pull an Airsteam.

With the loose steering, could it just be the electric steering? I'm certain its just that.

And those A/C seats are something else aren't they?

I've had two F150's the 5.0 and the Ecoboost. I preferred the v8. Sound was better, and seemed to handle everything better without having to work super hard. The ecoboost has legit power but seems like it's running super hard and MPG goes way down when driving hard or towing. The v8, although less power seems to handle it better. The Coyote is a great motor.

Get the EB, better towing and efficiency when not. My friend loves his. It's pretty fancy for a truck.

Probably in the minority, but I rather have the V8.

In my research there was a YouTube video that a ford dealership did where they go and ask the service techs and managers which engine they would choose and majority said v8. Mostly cause truck guys prefer naturally aspirated v8 but other explanations were that the v8 didn't have to work so hard, got better gas mileage while towing, more linear power, less plumbing and easier to maintain.

Its no wonder why these are the best selling vehicles, they are very capable and could not be more comfortable.

The EB is a great engine, tons of torque makes driving around town effortless.

I'm thinking Diesel. I saw a 2000 F350 on YouTube Tavarish. He has a 250k miles truck with headlights from a mid 2000's so it looks newer. The car has some sort of tune that can make it into a hot rod with a push of a button. Looks like it's still going strong after 17 years with aftermarket mods and everything. Great diesel torque and fuel economy.

Well, $#!+ snacks...those are good points. Better gas mileage while towing...for real? I guess what really matters is how often the truck's gonna be driven and for what purpose it will most likely be used.

If you're not gonna drive the truck at all except for when you're towing the Airstream, then I guess the V8s the way to go? My friend's F150 is his wife's DD.

The working harder/towing order is, from least to most.
Diesel, v8, fi 6.
I, personally, wish the colorado/canyon diesel came with the extended cab. Only the crew. I'd like the smaller truck but with a legimate bed.

It's probably gonna be a dedicated tow vehicle with the occasional trip to Home Depot. The f80 is the daily although in the summer time with those ac seats I may want switch this around. Love that feature!

I just got a 2017 Raptor that has the 3.5 Eco tweaked to 450HP and 510 ft lbs torque. Performance numbers are better than the Gen1 6.2 V8. The only downside I see (hear actually) is the 3.5 does not sound as good as the V8. I am probably going to put a Borla system on it but it just will never sound as good as a V8.

Other than that, very pleased with the Raptor. I get 2x the compliments on it than I did on my X5.

Ford needs to make good on the F250 Raptor rumors I've heard/read about. Not sure how the latest 6.7L Ford Powerstroke is, but the previous gens. have a laundry list of problems iirc.

Newer diesels have so much emissions and complicated crap on them. They make BMWs seem cheap to own. I wouldn't buy a diesel after 2003. My friend works at a diesel shop and they regularly have guys who spend tens of thousands in repairs on relatively new trucks. Turbos, head gaskets, injectors, high pressure fuel pumps, catastrophic engine melt downs due to emissions regen mode, etc. There is a reason all the local businesses have switched from diesel back to gas trucks. Sure you can delete some of the emissions stuff, but the government is cracking down in certain states with big fines for missing emissions equipment.

With the F150, the 5.0 V8 is the way to go if you want reliable power.

Raptors are great, if you don't need a real truck, and most folks don't. I have a 6.2l Raptor and love it, but for real towing and hauling...not so much. Great for house hold projects, comfortable, fun, and kicks ass in the dirt! I did tow about 10,000lbs with it once, for a short distance, it did a fine job, but it wasn't smart, I have other work trucks for that stuff.

Yes the 6.0l was a disaster, then they did a twin turbo mess for a year or two. The 6.7L has been very good.

So far my 6.7L Power Stroke has been good, but I have another truck (with a CAT engine) that has been a pain in the ass. High pressure fuel pumps have been the main problem.

I do worry about all the emissions crap and the HPFP on the 6.7, but for medium to heavy duty there is no choice.

I really like diesel, but I would have a hard time recommending one to a friend who just wanted to occasionally tow an airstream, the truck wouldn't even know the trailer was there, BTW.

Underworked diesels seem to have more problems then ones that are worked hard (according to my mechanic, and experience), my 6.0L got 'coked' up, mechanic said that doesn't really happen to the work trucks that are worked hard, I occasionally used mine for heavy towing, but mostly DD.

If you are going to DD the thing, a SuperDuty can be a bit of a pain to live with, parking lots, garages etc, I have done it, it can be done. I replaced my SuperDuty with a Raptor, I really like the truck.

A guy who I work with got an EcoBoost FX4 about the same time as I got my Raptor, it feels quicker around town. Neither of our truck has been back to the dealer ever for anything (independent mechanic for service). He now has 75,000 miles and seems to have a waste gate sticking on one of his turbos that needs to be taken care of. I have 50,000 mile on my 6.2L, no problems to report.

Very good friend of mine was in a '14 FX2 EB F-150, a '15 6.2 Raptor, and now a EB Raptor. I am sold on EcoBoost.
