Crater Lake in Oregon
Wife and I are going to take 4 days to drive up to Portland. Was thinking about a stopover to visit Crater Lake. Don't think my dad ever took us there.
Thoughts? I'm pretty sure *I* can make the hike to/from the boat dock. With several stops wife made the top of the Sun Palace in MExico and some 11,000 summits in Peru. Last edited by UncleWede; 07-06-2017 at 04:11 PM.. |

Went there recently with the wife and it's beautiful. The "hike" is more of a long walk and isn't that difficult but going back up is definitely a workout.
If you will be in downtown Portland, check out Departure and Urban Farmer in the Nines hotel. |

Yes. Go! Spectacular even if you just drive around the Lake. We did that road trip last year. Also, check out Timerline Lodge on Mt Hood (shining movie was filmed there); Hood River area; waterfalls between Hood River and Portland-- And, after visiting Portland for a few days, we drove home along coast. Very enjoyable.

The Yardhouse in Portland was good. I had the Porcini Crusted Halibut. It was delicious. Great choice of beers, too.
http://www.yardhouse.com/menu-listing/eat Mt. St Helens was an easy and worthwhile day trip if you have the time. Go all the way up to the Johnston Ridge Observatory.

Now it seems my son is coming with us, so that 2-day stopover in Tahoe may be out the window. Oh, and we have to rush back on Sunday from Portland because his first day of college is that Monday
And it's NOT General Sherman she wants to drive thru, because #sequoia and not #redwoods so the trip looks more like first night in Frisco, second night in Santa Cruz, then 3rd night somewhere near Crater Lake. |
