Painting an unpainted spoiler

Yo..

Just bought an M4 style spoiler for my F32. It came unpainted black. I'm going to paint black and clear coat it myself in my spray booth, but was curious about the underside of it...where the 3M tape goes.

Should I paint that or leave it bare plastic? Not sure which one would allow the tape to adhere better.

Thoughts?

Thanks fellas..

Personally, I would paint the whole spoiler, let the paint cure, and then 3m it to the car. No one is ever going to see the unpainted bottom, but I like doing any job all the way.

Having the bottom painted should not affect the 3m adhering between the spoiler and car.

I'd apply the tape first, then mask it off. Before applying the tape use 3M adhesion promoter. I'd be concerned that taping over paint could cause the paint to pull off, unless it was very well cured.

That's exactly what my shop did when I had them paint my M Perf Side Blades.

From BMW they were matte bare plastic with the 3m tape pre applied. I had them painted in gloss black

So I would use the 3m promoter and pre apply the tape then you could mask before paint if you wish (since tape is on the underside most it should see is some overspray since they really shouldn't be trying to fully paint the underside)

I would not completely paint the underside then apply tape. Paint will not have time to harden/cure properly in short amount of time

Thanks fellas. I've already gone ahead and painted it using the logic that a body shop would do the same thing, or if I wasn't so cheap and had bought a pre-painted one, it would have come fully covered as well.

I'm in no hurry, so it will probably have a week or more to cure before I put the tape on.
