Stock Oil Reset Mileage Interval?

Silly question, but after an oil change at what mileage does the oil service indicator count down from if you have never messed with the stock interval? I am asking because I cannot remember if mine goes to 14,000 or 10,000. I change my oil every 7.5k and its at 7,000 right now for the countdown. My last oil change was in May this year. So I am thinking it has to be 14,000 since I average about 1600 miles a month.

Download the PDF version of the owner's manual from BMW and keyword search "Condition Based Service" and "Service Requirements".

The others are correct, that the oil sensor is truly conditioned based and the number of miles until the next change will vary based upon how the car is driven. I drive ~900 miles per month and after most oil changes the car will predict next service will be needed around 15K miles, but could be less depending on the conditions of use.

As a note, I usually change the oil around 9-10 months, which is ~8000 miles, but that's just my preference.

I actually prefer GM's CBS which rates the oil in terms of remaining life as a percentage and recommends you change the oil when you get to 10% life remaining. The mileage between intervals varies depending on actual driving conditions. On my truck with highway driving a full cycle from 100% to 10% is usually 12-15K miles. If towing a lot, less than 10K miles.

The CBS I hate the most is my wife's Acura, because it is not a CBS! The manual says CBS, but at exactly 6375 miles after the oil change, it will say 15% remaining oil life. It never varies and the interval is way too short. It is not truly a CBS, just a mileage counter.

Its whatever milage it thinks it should be or a time counter
of two years. I wouldn't reset it unless it asks you to even if you
change the oil as the stupid Engineers used a down counter
with a starting point of 39. When it gets to zero you can't reset it
anymore.
