How do BMW suvs drive compared to E90 3-series?

I know BMW likes to call them "SAVs" but you know what i mean. I'm not actually getting a BMW SUV anytime soon, but I'm just curious how they ride/drive compared to E90 BMWs. Particularly the E70 x5 and F15 x5.

How is the power to weight ratio in the turbo 6 cylinder models (x-drive 35i)

How's the steering/road feel?

How does it handle corners?

Does it still "feel" like a BMW?

Is the suspension stiff/hard like the E90?

Can't speak for the E70s but we just picked up an 2017 F25 xDrive35i two weekends ago for the wife and I'm driving an E90 335i.

How is the power to weight ratio in the turbo 6 cylinder models (x-drive 35i)
- You can definitely feel the weight of the SAV from a stop. It's nowhere near as fun coming from an E90. For these new generation BMWs, the default Comfort mode pretty much turns the SAV into another other SUV on the road. It tries to gear up ASAP leaving slightly sluggish acceleration. If you change it to Sport mode, it's more in line with what I feel in my E90.

How's the steering/road feel?
- Steering feels a lot lighter than an E90. That "stiffness" is no longer there at slower speeds.

How does it handle corners?
- Haven't tried hard cornerings with the new vehicle yet...I'll give it a try when I get more comfortable with the SAV

Does it still "feel" like a BMW?
- Overall, it still feels like a BMW and we don't regret getting it. Sure it's not as sporty or nimble as an E90, but I would much rather drive the BMW SAV than any other SUV.

Is the suspension stiff/hard like the E90?
- Not as stiff. Some SAVs come with adaptive suspension for you to select but our vehicle didn't and it's a very smooth, comfortable ride.

Again, this is my limited experience on an F25 compared to my E90.

Interesting question. I've wondered this myself. Been thinking about an X for the wife. Of course it wont be as sporty or fast as an e90 but does it feel like a BMW? Only way to know is to drive it yourself.

I drove a new X1 and was pleasantly surprised by it. It felt a lot like driving a 3 series. I actually genuinely enjoyed the car. If I had to get an SUV, I'd get an X1.

I've driven an E70 X5 and it was neat. In sport mode it feels a little more like a 3 series, but there's no getting around its size.

The X5M and X6M are basically as fast as the 335i and even older M3's.

See https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...ry-car-feature for a good comparison.
The X3/X5 are way heavier and slower than their sedan versions, but they are consistently called the best-handling SUV's.

I have an E92 328i (2008) and a 2014 X3 xdrive28i with dynamic handling.

They are about the same speed-wise, but the E92 has more of a top end rush, where the X has lower end power, transmissions shift about the same smoothness.

Steering is much lighter on the X3, even in Sport+

I actually think the X3 handles just as good as the 328i when the X is in Sport+ (dampers full firm) otherwise the X can be a bit wallowy, you feel the weight.

Brakes on the E92 are better by a small margin.

I test drove an X5 with the m sport suspension one time, and it was pretty excellent. Hands down the best SUV I've driven.

Used to have a 1st gen Mercedes ML350 (2004 inspiration package 275/55/r17 tires) the steering wheel was heavier than our E90s.

I've driven a M-Sport X3 and I was pretty impressed. Granted it was a well cared for 2010, but still..

I own both. Over on the X5 forum I've found that quite a few e70 owners either own or came from the e9x platform.

The e70 is just a slightly larger e90 once you're behind the wheel. I was actually surprised at how similar it felt to the e90. I have the X5 35i and run a Stg 1 MHD tune. By no means does it make it a rocket ship, but it wakes up the N55 and helps it get the added weight of the X5 moving. Add in that you can tow some pretty serious weight with the X5 and it makes for a solid daily driver.

I had the new x3 as a rental 2 years ago ( when my car was rear ended) and I hated it. It was the turbo version. Talk about turbo lag, horrible. It was not even fast , highway driving was a nightmare to pass people. I asked the rental company to give me back the 4 cylinder Camry I had before

On paper it had more power than my car, but it surely did not feel like it.

Yea same as him, i have both on n55's. e70 running stage 2 on stock. definately a huge improvement over stock. but no rocket as he said. but e70 feels really solid.

btw, neighbor bought the f15. advise, save your cash, buy a highlander...., it drives better.

e series or look elsewhere. f series is a big FAIL for me. driven so many, just can't see my self buying any. altho i love the look of any F, i don't like the chassis, i don't like the steering, i hate the overall driving experiance. get a mazda cx9 instead, mazda feels more bmw like engineered than a F series

Like a bus. Next!

lol

In all seriousness, its not half bad, it feels like a really fat version of the e9x; only driven the e70. Not sure how the f15. Overall all fXX felt like driving a carmy, unless there name had some sort of affiliation to the letter M.
