M47 or N47
I'm looking to own a 320D and I do know about the timing chain problem on the N47, however when I am browsing threads here quite a few people own an LCI 320D and don't seem to be bothered about it. I know the M47 is supposed to be bullet proof as long as I change the engine breather and remove the swirl flaps but the LCI just looks so much better. So what are peoples thoughts on this?

Isn't the N47 notorious for a nasty timing chain though, and I'm looking to spend about 7k max.

Around 35-40mpg mixed but mainly around town.
Around 40-45+mpg on longer runs It's worth noting that I don't really hang about so I could probably improve a bit however, I've had it mapped so its rather fun! Also, I have the N57 lump in mine which is better on fuel (and a bit more powerful) than the previous M57. |

On my previous 325d with the N57 I used to average around 43/44. Runs would move up to higher 40's and town work high 30's. I used to drive as hard as conditions and speed cameras allowed, but never until it was warmed up.
The main issue is that these engines take around 15 minutes to reach operating temperature and that can take 25 if you drive straight into town traffic. After that, they are loose and economical. On my 330d, still with the N57, its slightly less, but it has Xdrive. If you really want to drive steadily, then low 50's on a run is possible. But you might as well be in a 318 if thats how you choose to drive. |
