Moving on to F80

After 11 years, 240K km and two water pumps it’s time to move on. I ordered the F80 this week and I should get it sometime in May. I’m going to miss the NA engine and the hydraulic steering but the power and overall M package is going to make up for that. I wish it were possible to drop an S55 into an E90 chassis but of course that’s just wishful thinking. I’ve been shopping for an E90 replacement for sometime. Because I want MT, there are not many suitable replacements. I won’t do Mustang/Camaro/Corvette so it came down to M3 vs 911. A 911 is a great driver but it entails too many compromises as a practical daily. Plus it’s a lot more dough speced the way I want it. I briefly considered an E90 M3 but the youngest sedan is going to be 7 years old now. So F80 it was. A bit of a compromise (what car isn’t) but I’m stoked for it!

Nice choice, barring that Austin Gelb Metallic color that looks like baby food to me.

Going full boring: Mineral Grey over Black leather. Briefly considered Yaz Blue but I was scared that I would get tired of it after a few years.

Another good choice. Don't like the ticket-getter colors much, though I did own a Mystichrome Cobra that I lusted over. But then I was always worried about the paint. I'd still love a 335i in Montego Blue though.

Enjoy your rocket sled! Those f80s are military grade :-)

I found the steering incredibly direct and loved point-click ability. When hustling the car I felt it matched the car very well.

Going from a 2007 328i to a 2018 M3 is not a bad upgrade!

The torque is going to be incredible. The M3 got some bad press but I don't really understand those who hate the steering or feel the ride is too stiff. It doesn't feel like an e90 but it still feels pretty damn fine. The engine note is not the best but it's good. The total package is what sold me on it.

Funny story: on the M3 test drive, my wife sits in the passenger seats and her first comment is "these sunvisors feel really cheap". They do feel cheaper than the E90 but I don't really care.

Congrats and let us know how you get on with it. Some of the long-term reviews I read complained that the stiff ride caused the plastic elements of the interior to rattle themselves apart. This is a problem with many new cars, not just BMW, but I'd be curious to hear if your F80 still feels solid a year down the line.

That being said, is my E90 the only one where the sun visors don't really go all the way to the windshield, and kind of hang too low in front of the driver, or are they all like that?

The entire interior, sans the leather in the M cars, does feel cheaper. But where are you going to get a car that pulls those numbers and isn’t a Camaro/Mustang for that price?

The performance level exposes the e90 M3 for the pig that it is.

I test drove a V8 non-Shelby Mustang. The engine note is wonderful and the handling is actually pretty good. But the interior is horribly cheap and the rear and side visibility is terrible. OTOH, the Mustang MSRP came in ~25% less than an F80. For those agnostic in a domestic vs import debate, a V8 Mustang would be a decent alternative to a 4-series IMO.

funny I had the same thought when I went from the E46 to the E90 only thing was it was the wiper blades and arms. It felt really cheap!

I haven't driven the V, but reviews suggest it can definitely hang on the track.

https://www.caranddriver.com/compari...c-ats-v-page-2

I would agree the Cadillac interior is ok, but leaves something to be desired compared to the Euro cars of similar price. Idk about the F80 M3/M4, but the early F80 3er's interior doesn't feel as nice as I think it used to.
