Any Cons Of Camber Plates

I'm looking into getting camber plates for my 335i. I autocross and want to get the most out of my 245/40/18 RE71's.

My question is for someone who does 8 to 10 events a year are camber plates worth it?

Also I've heard that camber plates can be noisy. Is this true? My 335i is my daily so I don't want to do anything that will compromise the driving quality of the car.

Camber plates are noisy whatever you do, they remove a rubber insulation layer that is in the oem strut hat, so there's no way around that.

Someone posted a detailed review of their vorschlag with pictures and video, can't remember if it's here or on the 2 series forum though but perhaps start by reading that

Regular road driving makes them wear fast. The only issue I had is over time, the bearings wear out and you can hear metallic noise when driving over bumps. Also you need to be more diligent about tire rotations and even flipping tires to prevent uneven camber wear.

Also I had camber plate bolts loosen up on me after getting an alignment at a regular auto shop. I took it to a race shop and they marked each bolt with a bright yellow paint marker so i can verify they're all still torqued at a glance. Just make sure you put everything in place to keep an eye on things, because it's another variable in your suspension now.

However, definitely worth it. Optimizing front end grip is critical to being fast.

I had Dinan camber plates on my last 2008 335i

These did not make any noise what so ever. I also added the M tension and wishbones - which increased camber to a negative 2. You could see the camber for sure.

I don't really think it increased NVH specifically, but the combination of the mods certainly increased road feel.

BEFORE I added the Camber plates:
I also went from a RFT to a Michelin Pilot Super Sport (at the time) and because I went from a hard sidewall, to a softer more compliant softwall in the PSS, I lost steering response (it was a bit slower on initial turn in). Once I put the camber plates on, and also the control arms, the steering was sharp, and there was dramatically less understeer and the car would rotate.

If you're tracking, you gotta do this... as I believe you know.

Options: if you are going to do coilovers, then you can get coilovers with camber plates built in and then you can control the height, which is the way I would go.

NOTE: the Dinan camber plates ADDED 0.5" of front end ride height. Which sucked. The coil overs can compensate for this.

HP Autowerks is a great site to go explore this, and Harold would give you great advice on stuff, plus great prices in the US.

Mike at N54 tuning in Canada is on the forums all the time, and he is a wealth of info and has great prices in Canada.

Hope this helps.

I wouldn't really consider the Dinan's camber plates, but I understand why they wouldn't make noise. I'm personally not a fan of fixed camber adjustment, because if you end up having too little or too much there's not really anything you can do about it.

The best way to get proper camber adjustment without the additional noise is to swap for adjustable control arm bushings. That's also better because it increases track width while increasing camber, for even better stability and steering response.

Now, I wouldn't consider Dinan anything.... but you raise very good points on the fixed camber.

I really like this option you have posted here and I may consider it myself. This is an inexpensive fix for better feel and more camber.

I contacted the company regarding XDrive.... the camber option is NOT available for XDrive. Bummer....

+1.

I'm more inclined to increase negative camber through these bushings and the BMW wheel hubs instead of camber plates.

I would imagine camber plates result in more NVH as well as wear out faster than both of the solutions above.

Lower control arm bushings, BMW wheel hubs/carriers, and M Performance Suspension will probably add at least an additional -1.0 to -1.5 degree of camber which is sufficient in my opinion for a car that is going to be driven on the street as well.

I would agree. I had -2.something on my last car with M3 wishbones and camber plates. you could actually see the wheel's camber. I would think 1.5 would be optimal, but I only base that on gut feel.

I run a square setup 255/40/18. I think the M3 wishbones or suspension parts may end up causing the tire to rub.

Interesting. Is there a different OEM wheel hub that would add more camber?

Question for you. Without changing stock front camber do you think 245/40/18 would rub at all?

Look at Item #2 here: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=31_0972

I don't think 245/40/18 would rub if your offset is correct. It is smaller in diameter than stock tires.

I have the Apex ARC-8 18x8.5 ET38 and 255/40/18 with no spacers. It does not rub.

Yes i'll get these wheel hubs for my next mod, currently at -50' camber which isn't enough, with an additional -30' should be good.

I used to have the m3 LCAs but they caused high speed stability issues, in particular under cross-winds.

Awesome. I'm running ET35 with no spacer so sounds like I should be good.

Thank you for the link. I'll keep those hubs in mind!

Stock F30 control arm might be able to have around -2°negative camber with camber plates. If you want more, you need M4's control arm. Then you can have -4° (my set up is -3.3)degree with lower coilover.

My recommendation is Ground Control Camber Plate. It looks beautiful and really good quality. I have run track at least once a month, but never had NVH from them. Worth it? YES!!!

If you tracking a lot with stock camber and street tires, it will end up with...
