Breakdown cover
I'm after advice on which breakdown cover to get for our family. Currently we have basic AA cover through our Lloyds Silver account. However I've had a letter today saying the cost of the account is going up to £12/month. As the breakdown cover is the only thing I'm interested in with the account, I think £12 is a lot for basic cover with no home start.
So to put you in the picture I have a 2010 330d and my wife has a 2006 120d, and we have two children (8&13). I would like nationwide cover and home start. Not too bothered about onward travel but if a good deal can be found then I'll think about it. How much do you guys pay and who with? Also it it better / cheaper to cover each vehicle or to cover the people in them? Regards, Nick |

Been looking at the big players (AA, RAC & Greenflag) and they all want quire a lot of money and you don't seem to be able to tailor the package to what you want - for example if you want cover at home with the RAC then you have to have the top package that has things that I'm not interested in.
I've also done some quotes on money supermarket etc, and the unknown companies are much much cheaper, but what are these unknowns like? What type of service do you get and what are the average waiting times |

Well this seems to be a pretty good deal :
RAC personal cover for me and the wife that includes roadside rescue, national recovery and at home for £148.99. Now the clever bit is if I take out this policy via 'TopCashback' I get £63 cash back meaning the total cost is only £85.99. |

We’ve had cover with Startrescue for a while. We’ve had them out once or twice to the old Citroen, and they’ve been great each time. Much better value than the big three.
To answer your questions specifically, we’ve never waited longer than an hour (usually much less, using local providers) and the service was excellent. |

I have been with the RAC for years simply because I get it through tesco club card points. I don’t shop there for everything but buying mainly alcohol & petrol throughout the year & using their credit card easily gives me enough points for my policy which includes onward travel, obviously no good if you never shop there!

Was with the AA for 16 years, used them a couple of times over that period, left at the end of the last year when I accidentally put petrol into a borrowed diesel car and they refused to attend.
I had realised before going anywhere near the ignition so all that was needed was for the fuel to be pumped/syphoned out, ended up paying £200 to call out a 'local' to get this done (was miles away from home on a Sunday night). Now with Green Flag, who I've used once and were very good, hire car and cross-country car transporter to get car home. |
