Non-turbo car options

So I'm back...

So I gave it my best shot, but I can't do it. Turbo engines just don't engage me. The lag means a real sense of disconnection for me from the driving experience. The b58 in my m240i is one of the best, least laggy turbo engines out there, which is why I felt like I might be ok with it. But after 2 months, I am not feeling it. truth is I would take my 2007 Z4 coupe with its slower n52 over the m240i b58 any day...I just felt much more connected with natural aspiration.

So back to the drawing board.

So I want non-turbo AND an automatic transmission that has very responsive paddles that give me the sense of connection (I want a manual but domestic compromise means auto for now). The Zf8 in the m240i was very good and responsive.

Here is the list of potential cars I have come up with (budget up to 100kish CDN:
Acura TLX V6 A spec
Audi s4/s5/rs5 2013-16 (does anyone know if the stronic is the same in the rs5 and s4/s5?)
cadillac cts-v (how responsive is GM 10 speed?)
Lexus rc-f (I am ruling out the basic rc as it seems pretty accepted that that auto has serious paddle shift lag)
CPO 991.1 base with PDK
Jaguar xe

thoughts and experiences on these cars ?

None but you're over thinking this.

Just get a NA V8 from GM, problem solved.

And where the hell do you "engage" around here? The roads are dead straight and monumentally boring.

the ats-v is.

The cts-v has the 8 speed and it's okay for upshifts but your zf8 in the m240i is much better

I'd posit that your real issue is the power bleed off at high rpm of the B58. When the small turbo gets to higher rpm, torque just crashes down. Anything over 5k is diminishing return.

The new S4/S5 2.9L turbo likes to rev more and holds power up high better. I think you'll find the supercharged models you listed are even worse about holding power up high.

In the junior Olympics version of this story, I changed from a Mazda 3 with the naturally aspirated 2.5L and a manual to a GTI and the VW has a higher redline, revs much better and makes better torque up high. I bought the Mazda because I was resisting turbos, but that was easily the worst motor I've ever owned.

Why isn't a E90 M3 not on this list then? It's practical and it's a hi-revving V8

Wrong. 6speed Chevy SS. Answer to all practical v8 questions. Or get an older Gt G8 with the manual as well

There are 17 listed on Cars.com with manuals. Two are an actual color.

If that CTS-V is from the newer generation; then hands down that is the car you should get.

Go test drive one; you'll leave home with it.

Indeed, the SS is an older platform and engine, but it works great for what it does. 4 doors, roomy, rwd, powerful v8 (albeit could be 450hp like the Camaros and corvettes) and has a usable boot for road trips. Plus it can be had with a manual or auto. The reason it wasn’t a hot seller was because it cost more than an SS Camaro, GT Mustang, r/t challenger, r/t charger, SHO Taurus, and everything else that it was trying to compete with when itself lacked an updated infotainment system and chassis platform.

If they updated the SS to the alpha platform with the LT1 and made magnaride standard, then I could see the need to price it where it was. The platform already supports v6 and v8 engines, front engine with rwd/awd configurations, and GM already has the engines and transmissions for the platform.

But the US market wants crossovers/SUVs/Trucks/and somewhat wants sports cars, not sports sedans. This, GM won’t bring back the SS anytime soon. Also why they cut the ATS

Yes true, just make a straight line rocket, turning is overrated and gets you jumping curbs like a mustang at a car show.

The supercharger in the zl1 and z06 has none of the lag of BMWs turbo + low displacement combination

I enjoyed my m240i but should have saved the depreciation and gone right for the v8

The 10 speed is as good as the zf8 imo

I am trying to stay newer with warranty. It will be the only family car and so we need something dependable and reliable.
