Socket Size Axel Nut - odd

People have quoted many times 36mm - 12 point socket for the rear axel nut, but for RWD, the thread is 24mm and if I am measuring correctly, it is a 33mm - 12 point. Is this the correct way to measure? Are ppl maybe quoting AWD which has a larger shaft.

I checked at is the same as the nut currently installed on the axel. I need to special order this 33mm socket as it is not readily available.

Thanks

It should be either 30mm or 36mm depending on the year of your car. Are you sure you received the right nut?

Or perhaps you've found the missing evolutionary link between the 30mm and 36mm nuts!

Ok, so there is a 30mm dimension on the nut, perhaps I was measuring it wrong. The thread is 24mm, and I found two flats and it measured 30mm. I don't have much experience with 12 point, odd choice indeed.

Am I correct, I need to buy a 30mm - 12 point?

That is not the correct way to measure the size of the nut. To measure a nut you need to measure across the flats. Not across the points as you are doing in that picture. This is easy on a 6 point nut, harder on a 12 point nut. Move your caliper off the point of the middle to the flats just one notch to the side. At this position, the caliper points will sit flat on the edges of the flat of the nut.

The measurement across the flats will be smaller than across the points, so your nut is something less than 33mm.

Edit - you just posted a second post and pictures. You got it! it is a 30.

Won't happen, I won't be using a Chinese made Torque wrench

After many CV axle rebuilds (because even though Chinese axles would be way easier to install; they are simply terrible) I've never had one come lose.

I actually did, I watched a few videos earlier this year but you kicked my butt into gear to do something.

For that, I will forever be grateful for your excellent knowledge and needy companionship.
