why can't i find any e90's with oil coolers?

I"m looking for a second e90/e92 .. i have an 07 coupe thats RWD with 118k and i'm looking to get something AWD.

So far i have not seen one sedan that has an oil cooler on it. I'm looking at the engine bay photos. Some have sport seats and paddle shifters but still no oil cooler in the engine bay ... how do i find a model with that?

also a note, i read that if you were to 'retro fit' an oil cooler you'd need to upgrade the oil bump .. which that would be something i probably wouldn't want to do.

Thought all "Sport", or is it "M Sport", optioned E9x models had oil coolers.

I don't think the paddles mean anything, other than AT. I also believe sport seats were an option without either of the above mentioned packages.

I only see one part number for n54 oil pumps:

11417560250

But for n55 oil pump there looks to be 2 part numbers and I have no idea the differences:

11417613549
11417573747

This is just what I found in a quick search and I’m in no way 100% certain there aren’t 2 different n54 pumps but I didn’t see a second part number for one in a quick search I just did.

Where did you read you need to upgrade the oil pump for adding a cooler? On other platforms guys add coolers and do nothing with the pump. Also our oil pumps are supposed to have variable outputs controlled by how the ecu perceived demand. I wonder if ECU would sense a lower pressure from an added cooler and increase output accordingly.

I know a few guys local to me who have added a second oil cooler to N54 cars that came with a single factory one. When I asked they said they saw no low pressure issues.

For the early years, you need the Sport Option PLUS the 18" wheel package to get the secondary oil cooler.

I have a 2008 XI with Sport package but with the 17" wheels. No second oil cooler.

Look for a car with Sport + 18" wheel package. Should have the second cooler.

You definitely can retrofit a second cooler. There are a few DIY's out there and there are some decent kits online for purchase.

If you are looking at only '07s, none of them had it. Try looking at later years.

this makes sense ... so they all have an oil cooler .. but the thing near the OFH is a second oil cooler?

Do you regret not having it?

I watched a mod bargains video about it .... it's possible they may not have been directly referencing the n54

The part attached to the OFH is the adapter to get the oil to and from the cooler.
There are aftermarket versions of this, as well.

Our 2007 E92 with the sport 18" wheels did not come with the oil cooler. Build date was 3/2007. I'm told BMW started putting them with the April 2007 production built cars.

I went ahead and "retrofitted" the oil cooler myself. Makes about 20-30 degrees temp difference in the oil.

I was waiting for one of you early 07 guys to chime in saying they have an oil cooler. Every thread like this has people going back and forth on when the oil cooler came standard. General consensus is the 07's didn't come with it but there's always someone who says they do.

Do you have the sticker? Maybe it was an additional option at the time? Or maybe it was retrofitted?

It is a " S823A-Hot-climate version" option thing, it has nothing to do with year or sport package, etc. Plenty of non sports came with an oil cooler.

For example, an 09' without it.

If I keep searching I am certain I will find a 09+ with the M sport package and no oil cooler. It just depends where you live, here in south Texas it would be harder to find one without the oil cooler.

I think the 335is may have 2. Could be wrong on that, though. They do have some sort of additional cooler that the i does not.

If you read again I said guys whose car came with a single cooler “added a second cooler”. You can tap the thermastat housing on the top where the extra plugs are and run lines to a second cooler. Looks like this:

This is done by guys local to me who are running 600+whp N54’s at strip and track and want extra cooling. The only reason I mentioned it was in regards to the statement about needing a higher output oil pump to run a cooler. They added a second cooler and said no issues with oil pressures. So I suspect you can add a cooler to a car without one and not have oil pressure issues.

The steering wheel gives it away.

Someone mentioned the Hot Climate package is needed to get the oil cooler. Might want to run the VINs through a decoder as you shop.

Well not necessarily, I look at the seats as a sure way to tell. I have seen the Sports multi function steering wheel on non sport packaged equipped cars.

Pretty sure that's an owner swap on the steering wheels, a common mod. Also not 100% sure, but I believe sport seats were available as an option on their own, without a sport package.
