car recommendations for learning to drive stick

my brother wants to learn to drive stick. he's 17. does anybody have any recommendations for a good car for him to use to learn to drive stick? i'm thinking probably something that has an easier to manage clutch. any recommendations?

What's his budget? From my experience Hondas, both new and old, have the easiest MT's to operate in the entire world. If you're looking for a new car, definitely take a look at the Civic coupe. Clutch effort is light, and the stick snicks through the gates so easily.

Huh? Unlimited choices?

Is this for a purchase, or a 1-day rental to learn to drive stick?

I had never driven a stick before when I got a Mazda 323 at age 17. I learned on that, no problem, leaving the dealership.

yea, i have heard good things about honda sticks. but does lack of torque cause you to stall quite a bit if you're clumsy with the clutch?

Kind of, not really, and in any case it's better that way, because you will be more skilled later on. I learned on a little van from the 70's with 3 gears and no brakes, to stop I had to to learn to downshift all the way to first and use the hand brake. (I learned in the summer i was visting China)

I started on the 70's Van (3 speed)
moved on to a 94 Acura Integra coupe (5 speed)
then to a 97 Gmc short bed truck (5 speed)
then now a 335i coupe (6 speed)
and a 2001 Honda CBR600 F4i (6 speed)

never touched a slush box in my life, don't know how to drive an automatic.

The Hondas (and Acuras) have a really smooth, short and precise gear feel, I personally think its better than anything else out there to learn on especially for a cheap car.

What ever you do, don't get an American cheap car to learn, its pretty shitty.

the van looks like this, it was actually pretty fun driving in that thing

My first car was a 2001 Honda Prelude and that was ridiculously easy to learn on.

I learned on a Honda S2000...kinda tricky since it's so powerful and the clutch is obviously for the more experienced... But man has the gearbox spoiled me. I am so much better now at driving stick (don't always get to drive it, as it is my uncle's). We are getting a '08 Jetta soon in manual, and damn that gearbox + clutch = compared to the S2k. Not really sure on what a good car to learn on is? An old BMW perhaps?

Rent a Mini Cooper from Midway car rental in L.A. (the only place that rents manual tranny cars in L.A.). It's like $100 a day, Mini Coop is one of the best to learn on, taught my GF a few months back.

It depends on how inclined your brother is towards cars. If he's a quick learner, then I don't think it should really matter what car it is. I learnt how to drive a stick on my M5 ... the car has a lot of power and torque so I guess it's easier to take off than a car with less power (??) ...
