Snow tires on performance cars FTW
https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...winter-safety/
I'm a big proponent of using snow tires in winter months to be able to enjoy my car year round. My M2 with Michelin Xice 3 rubber is quite capable in even the worst of storms. The idea of buying a beater never crosses my mind. The attached article proves that even the sportiest of cars, when equipped with proper tires, can still be fun in inclement weather conditions. Yes, the Corvette's performance was lacking, but it's still capable to get from point A to point B.

Indeed. The potholes are more worrying than the snow, but I've driven in it most of my life.
Though by all accounts it looks like we're going to have a relatively mild winter. No snow sticking to the ground here yet.. We had a couple days where there was a light dusting on the roads that stuck around for a few hours. The C&D article, they went up to Calumet, which is basically as far north in Michigan as you can go. Basically on lake superior. They get a ton of snow up there. |

Park the Porsche as soon as the roads start getting salted. No winter tires needed. I do have them on my GLK, with AWD I don't mind driving in the snow too bad. Although I wish I lived someplace that let me tick the "What the hell is Winter??" box.

The one downside as I see it, salt damage. But, it you can afford a new(er) 911, you can afford weekly car washes.

They have a touchless nearby I plan to run through once a week to get salt off. Followed by a waterless wash

Snow isn't the issue and good tires are night and day. The salt is the only reason I park m3.

Michelin Alpin PA4s on xDrive ready to go on the HREs. Granted, I'm so low I'll probably be a snow plow.

I didn't dream day and night about my 1M just so I could buy it and treat it like some unusable piece of jewelry that needs bubble-like protection. Modern car culture encourages detailing, paint protection, preventing depreciation, multiple cars for multiple purposes—-but it doesn't encourage seizing the moment enough.
I'm pretty damn happy with ONE car I drive all year round and have successfully raised a 3 year old in since the day he was born. No compromises and lots and lots and lots of memories. These cars were MADE for all use...its shameful to think people buy their dream cars and don't use them out of paranoia and fear. A product of part clever marketing, propogated stereotypes, and materialist thinking. I don't care if it's a collectible—-the most important thing about it is that it's MY only car and I'm going to use it as it was intended to be used... Oh and it's made me one hell of a better and more careful driver in the winter!!! I've run Nokian Hakka R2s in the past and since last year Michelin Xice3s. Both great tires. Prefer the dry and wet handling of the Michelin's though...

What gets me is people think that salt is going to just automatically destroy your car. While its not great for it, giving it a good rinse-off once a week or so (as needed) and it will be fine. If you leave it on there all winter, then you're going to run into some problems, but the same can be said for any number of road contaminates out there.

I have never had snow tires before, but they were def needed on my 335i RWD this year as the first snowfall we had, I slid into the curb going very slow around a corner. Snow tires are a night and day difference, I was hesitant at first as I thought " there is no way they can make that big of a difference" boy was I wrong. Drove in a blizzard this past saturday with no issues or worries at all!!!

We don't ever get snow here in the SF Bay Area, but we do get a good bit of rain in the winters. I had wondered if it would make sense to keep a set of "all seasons" for winter wet time, but from what I've been reading they really aren't any better than performance tires. https://www.bmwblog.com/2015/10/05/a...-for-the-rain/

I have General Altimax Arctic 12's on my RWD 328i and it did pretty well in the snow, better than I thought it would.
