E90 warranty and servicing question
Hi all,
I have seen an e90 which I am interested in purchasing from my local bmw dealer. The dealer is not very helpful, and it seems they are not sure about warranty and servicing questions themselves. The car was registered in May 2006 Its done 68k (a lot of miles per year , i know). What I want to know now is a) How much warranty is remaining b) What that warranty will cover In terms of servicing, its gone in on 235.k, 38 and 59k. I am assuming these are the required servicing stages. Now I just want to know when the next service is due! Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. thakns ! Adam |

Hi
a) Warranty will run until May 2009 b) It covers mechanical and electrical faults that are not down to wear and tear. Even parts that are subject to wear and tear but fail abnormally early should also be covered. I have found the BMW Warranty to be pretty generous in what it covers. Servicing is not to a set schedule. It depends on driving style, miles covered and time elapsed. The onboard computer tells you what needs servicing and when. It can mean more trips to the dealer, but less money spent on each visit as only the required bits are serviced.

I'm pretty sure it's unlimited these days. I'll check in the handbook if no-one else knows for sure.

I don't think there are mileage limits, but not sure. Here's the info from the bmw website
New Car Warranty guidelines Warranty repairs will be quickly and effectively carried out if you follow the guidelines below: 1. Report any defects to your Authorised BMW Dealer or Authorised Repairer as quickly as possible. A minor defect corrected now could prevent you being inconvenienced in the future. 2. If servicing has been carried out by a non-Authorised Repairer then the dealer reserves the right to reject any claim where it is felt that the cause of the defect is due to the use of a non-approved BMW part or inadequate servicing or repair by a non-Authorised Repairer. 3. Your warranty does not cover you for faults which arise as a result of misuse, negligence, accidents or normal wear and tear. 4. Your BMW has been designed and built to extremely high standards to achieve optimum performance and economy. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer can be held responsible for modifications to the vehicle which lead to defects, unless those modifications have been approved by the manufacturer or its authorised dealer. 5. The purpose for which your BMW was designed and built was as a passenger carrying vehicle under normal driving conditions. The warranty therefore cannot extend to faults that arise as a result of the vehicle being used for racing, rallying or similar competitive sports. 6. Consequential loss as a result of a warranty problem is not covered. The vehicle owner should ensure that adequate insurance cover for the loss or damage of personal belongings, property, etc. has been made. 7. We understand that a defect might come to light after your official warranty has expired. In the interests of customer satisfaction may we ask that you bring such a situation to the attention of your Authorised BMW Dealer or Authorised Repairer, so that full consideration can be given to the matter. Tyres Tyres are warranted by their respective manufacturer for defects in material and workmanship and your Authorised BMW Dealer or Authorised Repairer will submit claims to them on your behalf, should the need arise. Adjustments Adjustments are covered for the first 12 months. This does not apply to adjustments which are part of normal scheduled maintenance services. Other Items Wheel alignment and balancing faults occurring as a result of a manufacturing defect are covered for the first 12 months or 12,000 miles in total, whichever comes first. Wiper blade insert faults occurring as a result of a manufacturing defect are covered for the first three months or 3,000 miles in total, whichever comes first. Fitted Parts Genuine BMW Parts which are purchased and fitted outside the warranty period have 24 months' unlimited mileage warranty. Warranty Outside UK Every new vehicle supplied by a BMW (UK) Limited authorised dealer carries a worldwide warranty. For the first 24 months, should your car need to be repaired under warranty outside the UK then it must be taken to the most convenient BMW Dealer in that country and the work will be carried out under warranty, provided you can show that the vehicle is still within the 24* month warranty period. This can easily be done by producing the service booklet and showing the 'FREE PRE-DELIVERY INSPECTION' box stamped by the selling dealer. The 3rd Year is only valid in the UK. If you travel abroad on holiday, however, and warranty work needs to be carried out, please retain all invoices and any replaced parts where possible and on your return to Great Britain contact your local dealer who will process your claim for you. Paintwork Warranty The paintwork warranty covers your vehicle against defects such as blistering, discolouration or staining of the visible surface of all painted body panels occurring as a result of faulty manufacture or workmanship for a period of 36 months on vehicles registered from 1st Janaury 2004 without any mileage limitation. All paintwork repaired under warranty must be carried out by an Authorised BMW Dealer or Authorised Repairer. Guidelines 1. Although modern paints are durable and resistant to many external hazards, they cannot reasonably be expected to be totally resistant to all. You should therefore take particular care with your paintwork if you live in or near an area where industrial fallout is prevalent. Please read the relevant section in your handbook on paintwork for more details. 2. Bird lime can have an extremely corrosive effect on your paintwork and should be removed as quickly as possible. 3. Since damage caused by industrial fallout or bird lime is not a fault of manufacture, this cannot be claimed under warranty Anti-Corrosion Warranty All new BMW cars registered from 1st Janaury 2004 are covered by a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty against perforation by rust. All repair work carried out under the anti-corrosion warranty must be carried out by an Authorised BMW Dealer or Authorised Repairer. The warranty covers corrosion which occurs from inside the metal panels or box sections of the car. The warranty does not cover corrosion caused by neglect, accident damage, stone chips or other external influences.

There is some info on the approved used car scheme here, including details of the warranty: http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/auc/about...ts/0,,,00.html There should be no need for a service within 4000 miles and if there is a 'demonstrable fault' which they fail to resolve within the first 30 days / 1000 miles you can ask for an exchange or refund. |

You'll soom get used to the steering. Mine is... ...shall we say 'weighty' as opposed to 'heavy'. I only really noticed this again when I had a brand new 08 320d courtesy car last week, that was as light as a feather, don't know whether it had some sort of active steering on it or anything. Mine is a 330d so is a heavier car anyway.
Which model are you going for SE/M Sport, 'd' or 'i'???

I don't consider the steering to be heavy on either the 335d or the 120d (both hydraulic) but I was always used to driving cars without any power assistance. Regards Chris

All have electric steering now. I find my e92 very light, but I'm getting used to it. But I did come from a 90 Porsche 944S2 in which the steering was quite heavy.
