NOx issue N53?

Hey guys,

Recently I've been looking at my diagnostics from my 325i
Summary of my car: e90 2008 pre lci with the N53B30 engine
Km: 167000

Since July I've seeing the same faults in my Carly app.
Maybe you guys can help me identify where it comes from and what it might be.

These codes are almost always in the app.
/0030DC : nitrogen oxide sensor Heating
/002b05: nitrogen oxide sensor heating

De codes beneath are some that I've seen in August but never came back.

/002b07: nitrogen oxide sensor electrically
/002b06: nitrogen oxide, Lamba lineair
/002afb: nitrogen oxide sensor, binary Lambda.

In the following week I'm going to replace the Valve cover gasket and the oil filter housing/cooler gaskets.

Furthermore I'm noticed some 'rough' idle. Most of the times it keeps the revs nice at level but it drops one time. Then you feel the car and it's gets the revs back. When that happens you see a little bit of smoke out of the exhaust. It doesn't smell weird.

The car drives good, don't really notice any loss of power. If it wasn't for Carly I'd never knew any of these codes.

All the bobines have been replaced after a recall. One injector has been replaced a couple of years ago. The NOx sensor has been replace 1,5 year ago.


Is there anybody that could lead me in the right direction. Next week the car is going to a bmw specialist. Maybe I could give them some knowledge on forehand.

Forget about the OEM NOX they are shite and are prone to regular failures on the N53. Many of us on the E60 forums are using a NOXEM from these guys, cheaper than the OEM ones and works a treat. Have a read on their blogs section, this guys knows his stuff on the N43/N53 engine.

The NOX codes might be thrown from an underlying issue that causes the misfires that in turn cause the rough idle.
You wouldn't get the misfire codes unless a CEL would be displayed, at least that was my case, so you'd think nothing is wrong.

Have a read through my thread here https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1571824 and see if you can relate with any of the symptoms I am experiencing.

As above there will usually be something upstream of the Nox sensor which will cause rough idle. Most likely injectors.

I think you said you replaced 1 injector. Ideally you should replace 3 injectors at a time. This is because the two "good" injectors will be overcompensating for the "bad" injector. So even if you replace the bad injector, the other two will have worn quicker than normal. So if injector 2 was bad, than replace injectors 1 and 3 along with injector 2.

The injector was replaced before I bought the car. On the receipt it says only 1 injector.

I think I'll have some work on this car. Because when I set it in gear R of D there is a metallic rattle noticeable till 2000 rpm.

This car needs some more love.

Can you tell me where to look in the Carly app for misfires? I don't know which menu to pick while driving of idling.

*just looking at the bill. It's says replaced injector cylinder 2. The cost of only one cylinder was €274. It was done by a non bmw dealer.

Edit 2: just drove some miles and there is smoke coming from the valve gasket when it's idling. I have good hoops to solve a lot of problems when the gaskets are replaced.
When gasses get out before hitting a sensor, it's normal to get a fault. The engine notices the engine load and the gasses it comes with. If a lot of gasses escape through the valve, it doesn't match the predicted gasses is has to have.
