Leather Treatment

Whats the best stuff for keeping leather clean and supple, dont wan't dirt geting into it and it going brittle, the seats in the car could do with some care too I guess.

I use Autoglym leathercare myself mate, seems to do a good job on the leather I`ve had in the past, and just used it to spruce up the Dakota in my newly acquired steed.

Definately Autoglym for suppleness and it absorbs quickly, smells nice and you don't end up sliding around the seat next time you 'hoof it' around a tight bend.

Autoglym is more of a cream to 'feed' the leather as opposed to really cleaning it. I would suggest for actual cleaning another product say similar to supaguard which you dilute so many parts cleaning agent to water. It's a bit like women's facial products - never believe the ones that claim to do more than one thing, it doesn't work like that.

Autoglym will work wonders on your leather gear as well lol.

Gliptone for me, used Autoglym and in the end the leather goes shiny. Put Gliptone on that shiny leather and it looked like new again. Very impressive stuff.

Also use Chelsea Leather Food if the leather is new, this will keep it looking new for years, and that nice matte look too.

Where do you get Gliptone from??? Also - ive noticed that my drivers seat is starting to wear a little on the right hand side bolster where i get in and out and my clothing obviously scrapes across the leather. The leather has faded slightly and looks a little worn - it really bugs me!! Would Gliptone help make it look better or do i need something more hardcore??

Gliptone Liquid Leather is the best stuff, no doubt. Kept the 18 year old seats in the Porsche like new. Search for Gliptone on eBay - plenty of sellers.

As said you can get it from Ebay, or direct (google Liquid leather) they`re based in Todmorden.

bmwbailey, they do something called a scuffmaster kit for around £10. BMW Black they`ll have off the shelf but if you send a sample off to them they`ll colour match anything, I`ve just had some Laguna Seca Blue made up and my side bolster now looks perfect.

Another vote for Gliptone here, if you like a matt finish.

If it is wearing on an E90 already take it to the dealer, they will replace it.

Wonder why Jaguar, Aston Martin etc. use Autoglym then - must like the brighter finish.

This gliptone stuff is said to give a matt finish, fine, but is it an insipid 'dull' appearance which I wouldn't welcome? I'll give it a go as it seems popular.

I will try and dig out some photos of my brother 530i E39, the guy I bought it from used Autoglym and it looked very clean, but also had a shine to it that showed its age. I took pictures when we got it and again after using Gliptone on it, it seriously looked like it was 12 months old afterwards, not bad for a 6 year old car.

Photo would be good.

It's good to talk - you learn so much on here, even though for some discussing leather cleaning products is probably a 'dull' subject. They just don't understand that's all.

It does give a matt finish (I think there are other finishes actually) but I much prefer that. Shiny leather looks worn-out to me, as if there is too much arse polishing going on.

It also depends if the leather is taut (as in my Porsche) or ruffled, as in "comfort" seats.

'Arse polishing' Nearly spat my tea out!

I agree, shiny leather can give the appearance of 'looking old' and as you say especially on taut leather like the Porsche. I'll definately give the gliptone stuff a try. Willhollin, are you taking all this in?

Going O/T slightly, what Porsche have you got Ian?

I'm afraid it's just been sold, a decision I'm regretting greatly. It was (hopefully still is) an immaculate 944 S2. Going to get another when I can. I sold this to finance a project that never materialised.

Oh I see. Well not much to say on that front then except hope you find another one. Sometimes having something to aim for keeps you going.
