Please help - loud crackling sounds from audio system.

So I went out for lunch today in my 17' M2, turned on the radio and all I got was got nearly constant and very loud and ear splitting crackling and popping noises. It was almost like a series of electrical power surges. I've lost all regular radio audio. The sound actually continued after I shut the car down and even after I locked the car.
