Where's the excitement for the upcoming 2020 Porsche 718 GT4?

There seems to be no hype around this awesome upcoming vehicle whipping around the Green Hell. Am I wrong?

Because no one knows for sure which engine will be in it.

It's been in the making since 2016, but only leaked shots. A lot of dealers I know have already taken deposits.

It would be a surprise if it does not borrow the engine from the recently revealed 718 GT4 Clubsport:

https://www.motorauthority.com/news/...race-car-guise

Recall that the last generation GT4 Clubsport:

https://www.porsche.com/internationa...gt4-clubsport/

lent its engine to the road car (with some prudent modifications for street use, no doubt).

It's a naturally aspirated H6 like the 911 GT3 but the engine is less extreme with a lower redline, smaller displacement, and less power.

Has ANY Cayman variant gotten as good or better engine/performance than its 911 counterpart?

No?

this GT4 is rumored to have an RS badge.. and probably will have above 400hp.. there is something called detuning like most of the brands do for engine options im talking about.. is it a surprise for you?

Haha that's funny.

Porsche is the master of product positioning. They'd never drop the 4.0 GT3 engine into a cayman. Especially not while the 718 GT4 will release before the next gen 992 GT3, meaning you'd have engine parity across the lines and they wouldn't allow that.

The 981 GT4 had a detuned Carrera S engine. Let that sink in...not only did they not use the old 3.8 GT3 engine but they used a Carrera S engine and still dumbed it down even further.

Regardless, the GT4 will be a great car, but don't hold you breath on them dropping a GT3 engine into it. Heck, the jury is still out on whether it will even be NA...I don't think any car in Porsche's history has been as delayed as the 718 GT4...could be due to still playing with engine configurations (and fitting the particulate filter).

Yea the main issue is whether this will be NA vs turbo and not about it being the GT3 4.0. Lot's of people have deposits on it but not much info out there about it and a lot of those guys say they will cancel if it isn't at least NA.

There's 0% chance it will be a turbo. I do think that the odds of an RS version are low, but suppose the price would likely be so high that it may actually happen.

"Is expected" != "for sure."

The fact that all of my industry contacts still can't "confirm" one way or another if that indeed WILL be the engine of choice, given how connected they are?

At this point it's still all speculation. That's like 3 months ago the HOT rumor about the base mid engine C8 Corvette was "expected" to start at $169K.

RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT.

Did you just link to an article that's 6 months old and another that's a year old?

As others have said, nothing is confirmed...but I wouldn't trust any of those reporting sources. They are all in it for clicks and page views, not trusted information. For every source that says it's a GT3 engine, another source says something completely different.

If they throw in a de-tuned 4.0 GT3 engine then it would be an absolutely epic car and perhaps one of the greatest driving cars from Porsche in a long time...and I hope that comes true! But I still think it's a longshot.

Probably not, but personally, eww. Leave a naturally aspirated screamer. Personally they should rename the GT2 the Turbo Plus Plus.

No, the current 3.8L is nothing special to be honest. If it was an actual 9k rpm 4.0L GT motor, I’d say hell no don’t touch it.

Yeah it still sounds NA, but more quiet because of the particulate filters.

This man is likely correct. Word is spreading fast (dealers received a bulletin, apparently) that the 4.0 NA is confirmed. Allegedly has 420HP.

New Boxster Spyder will have the same engine.

Perhaps juiciest rumor from the bulletin is that the Cayman GTS will switch to a detuned flat 6 as well, putting out 400hp. May become the new best value car in Porsche's lineup.
