Hi Mate,
In the 335d, I know CD has got one and I think there is one other, redmax? Its a great mod, ive been out in a LSD equipped 335i and the difference is staggering. Traction out of bends is amazing. Just hooks up, no TC light and just fooks off.

Our 330d d3 has a Quaife LSD fitted and for road use, the traction is fantastic, but as its a mechanicaly geared Automatic Torque Biasing (ATB) differential and not a clutch type LSD, it can be a bit unpredictable when drifting as sometimes it turns into 1 wheel drive as it will never fully 'lock up' so to speak...
The other downside to the ATB LSD is that when at the limit on the track, if you hit a rumble strip with the inside wheel and it leaves the ground, instantly you loose all predictable grip at once as the geared ATB diff immediatley stops to function, whereas with a clutch diff, they would lock up and the same drive would be transmitted to both wheels, even with 1 wheel off the ground. ATB LSD's are not perfect for road racing like Touring Car's for instance mainly for this reason. ant. |

No M-Sports get an LSD these days, only M-power cars...
I think I'm right in saying that the e36 generation of M-sports were the last generation of of non M-power 3 series cars to get LSD's

Exactly the same as it would in a manual. It locks up and both wheels get traction. Works a treat.

i think it could be fun - i can donut mine all day long in the dry or wet - but drifting might be more fun.
the thing is though, where you can play with the clutch and revs when drifting a manual, with our auto-boxes always wanting to change down a gear when revs get too high how would you overcome that? |

The Birds diff is the Quaife ATB diff - only place you can buy one for BMWs now I believe as they have done a deal with Quaife.
I had a quaife diff (and gearbox) in one one of my former vehicles (fwd) and it was amazing. I have also driven caterhams with and without a Quaife diff and the difference is very noticeable. As Ant397 points out it has its limitations but for road and occasional track use I'd say it was pretty spot on. Its the first mod on the list for my car..... |

i have one
its an amazing difference over standard !! like carlos said mainly noticeable when exiting roundabouts and exiting tight bends, just apply the power and it powers on with very little 'yellow light action.' It is expensive though, but if you plan to keep the car like i do then you will get your moneys worth in grins ...to be quite honest its the best mod i have made to the car, get one fitted you wont regret it any other questions just ask (be warned though im not that technical )

The E36 328i Sport came with an LSD as standard (I know because I looked at one) I believe but past a certain year it got traction control instead.

I highly recommend the Quaife and Birds. As another person kinda said, it's a great improvement for the daily driver. I've had it in my car since March 2007 and it really shines in less than ideal situations like snow and wet roads. In snow on a steep mountain climb the car tracks straight as an arrow.
You have to make sure you have the right oil in it first. For the Quaife, the factory oil for our non-LSD 335's is what i use and it works perfectly. |
