Long story short, ive been borrowing a small 4x8 utility trailer that i haul with my Camry, since i dont have a truck/SUV. Im in need of a trailer more and more these days and im going to pick one up but the question is, what size do i get? Ideally i would get a 5x10 but i may go with a 5x8 since my camry can only tow a couple thousand pounds. Buying a 4x8 has also crossed my mind but it can be a bit small sometimes. What do you guys think?

The trailer needs to be safe and sized for the loads (weight and dimensions) being carried.

The tow vehicle needs to be able to safely tow and control the trailer.

So, if you’re pulling more weight than the Camry is rated to handle, you need a different tow vehicle. The smallest trailer is usually the easiest to pull and control, but it has to handle the load you’re putting on it. So I would start with the loads being carried and work forward, so to speak, to the trailer and tow vehicle.

Go big or go home - 40' duallie with onboard brakes should do the trick. You can mount the 5th wheel in the trunk where the spare tire well would be.

Some loads will be light, under 500lbs. Others will be 2000+ and all shapes/sizes.

My hitch/reciver is rated at 3500lbs, 350lb tongue weight so I'm good there, but the manual only says 1,000 towing capacity. I'll push that to 2-3k though I think it'll be just fine for the short distances I'll be going. I

Trailers can be expensive. It might be cheaper and more useful to buy a small beater truck.

I have a 2002 Camry 4 cylinder and it can barely move itself let alone a trailer. Don't do it, use your head.

I don't think using your head is a good idea either but it appears some people are into that.

Registration, insurance and maintenance adds up and the fact I would only be using it to haul stuff a few times a year makes it hard to justify.

I've already towed over a 1,000lbs with it no problem, it'll be just fine. Mine is a 2007, my old 2001 was wayyyyyy weaker. I did a 0 to 60 run with my draggy performance meter and ran 10.9 seconds in the old camry, and 8.2 in my new camry, if that doesnt tell you anything then idk what will lol

In that case you might look into the Home Depot $19.99 truck rentals.

Its not so much the towing as it is the stopping and changing directions in a hurry.

The bigger the trailer the heavier it will be by itself, a decent 5' x 10' will probably be at you max tow rating before you put anything on it.

5x8 is perfect for towing 2000lbs or less. I've been using one on my 1 series and honestly you barely feel it unless it's super windy, just make sure to drive defensively.

This. My father in law got rid of his F-150 tow vehicle used 2-3 times a year to launch his boat and we now rent from Uhaul instead. We may look like total noobs towing and launching the boat, but it was an ingenious solution.

It's not the size of the trailer but the weight. If you are buying a trailer, I would get a slightly bigger one since most state registration cost the same but I would caution not to overload the trailer with more than your transmission can handle. The wider trailer will give you the ability to haul bulkier and longer items.

If you are only hauling for short distance or on occasion, I would suggest renting from Home Depot or Menards instead.
