just bought a 320si, anyone know the car?

i have been looking for a 320d m sport for a while, but to no avail, i have just agreed to buy a white 320si from Dereck woodman who are in Blackpool.

The car was a demonstrator and 1 other owner. I have done a bit reading up on here and i see the cars have had a few problems. IE starting probs but i also read alot of the 320 and 318 have had problems to.

What are the servicing intervals on these cars, i read 4000 mile thats as bad as my old evo lol.

any info or advice would be great.

not putting the 320si down but keep looking out for the 320d there so much you can do with this engine remap and so on, and its service is alot longer one at 18k ish then the next at 40k better mpg too,

Hiya Phil,

Welcome to the Si gang.

I think mine has been the most troublesome probably because I do so many miles. (52k at the moment in 2yrs).

Ignore the standard 320 engine problems its only the cold starting problems the Si suffers from. I've had the top half of my engine replaced 6k miles ago. So far so good. The engine is unique and doesn't use normal valvetronic it just revs and revs. If you get a chance take yours on the Autobahn or track and test the top end it just sounds awesome.

The service intervals are pretty much standard to the std 320 with the exception of the valve clearance needed every 2nd oil change (not mentioned in any customer handbook but in BMW service manual!)

1st oil service 20k (8 mths after brand new)
2nd spark plugs 32k
3rd oil service+valve clearance 39k
4th air filter 46k
5th brake pads 47k
6th brake fluid 48k

As you can see its been in and out the garage a few times in two years (and more for the problems). Its not as frequent as Evo's though!!

Just be prepared for the 2nd oil service its not cheap £500-600 is what the stealer told me (I don't pay as its co car).

The Si is a different kettle of fish to the 320d. Which is why it was the homoglation car. If you were looking at long service intervals and best MPG you'd go for a 318d.

I'm sure you could probably add a supercharger or turbocharger to the Si as there more than enough space in the engine bay due to the engine placement being pushed back further than normal. Now that would be awesome.

i know the si is different but tbh noone is gonna put a supercharger in it with all the probs thats going on with them that would ffffs up the warrenty, a little remap on a diesel does wonders for the engine,i think the 320d would be better than the 318d when on the motorway its not reving harder and crusin at lower revs i know on book it looks better, but my brother had 118d and there was nothing in it

Hmm don't agree with that

As the buyer of a Si is not going to be the same type of buyer as a 320d
The Si was made to be modded to maximum not just to be chipped or remapped.

After all why waste all the preliminary work that's been done by BMW Motorsport engineering.

Anyone can remap or chip their car.

Can't remember the username of the guy one here - but he bought a car from stealers and took it to his garage and modded the ice, wheels and suspension and then drove back to the stealer in the same day!

Now that's what I call guts - i'm sure he aint worried out warranty.
Most of the Si's are now coming to the end of their warranties anyway.

i call that silly really if its new whos gonna buy a car thats been messed around with, if it did go wrong gonna cost a few bucks in labour charges to put right, weather a remap can be easy pulled out when ever, i think if you was gonna turbocharge something i would do it on a 3ltr or something, sorry if i am wrong but i thought i si was allready tuned in the first place over the 320i

You need to drive a Si to appreciate the difference. Engine (and its placement), brakes, exhaust are different to the 320i

We are not talking about a modded Corsa we are talking about a professional job. There are quite a few Japanese guys who have modded their Si's. If I could read the Japanese on their forum I could work out what they have done.

There are lots of members on here mod their cars why wouldn't any of us buy their car if the job has been done professionally. There is a difference to bodging it and having done properly.

Adding a turbo to 3ltr could be dificult due to lack of room in the engine bay (unless you shift the engine £££) The Si already has this done for you by BMW.

The 320i is a different drive to Si. Even my boss commented on the ride as a passenger (his is a 320)

After having a E92 325i for a few weeks I agree with your next move only because its a V6 (love the sound) 335i is the way to go in my mind (as I don't pay for fuel and don't like d's).

thanks for all the replies, the car is a 06 in white with 12000 miles, leather and rear parking sensors, not sure of any other bits and bobs.

I was looking for the diesel like i said but i only do 5-6k miles a year, so don't think i would reep any rewards in petrol costs.

The remapping thing is of no interest to me i have had the performance cars, and do not want to start with all that again. I'm coming of a 2 year ban, so quite happy with a modest 180bhp.

i think that fact the car is white and the si it will always be a bit special come time to sell.

I was really more concerned with car issues, but after a bit searching it seems across the board with the petrols to. I have been given a extended 1 years warranty with the car, i should i keep the car past that point would look to extending it further.

As for the price what do you guys reckon?

Hi

nice choice of car.

Just a word of warning to you. I note your getting your car from Woodmans in Blackpool. I have had dealings with them before. Be careful when you pick the car up, ensure everything works, check the body work and paint work. There guys are the best at cleaning cars ready for a customer pick up. If your not happy walk back into the showroom and ask to speak to General Manager.

Good luck

I think it looks better in white.

When I chose my colour I initially wanted white or red as I didn't want to pay for metallic (Co car). But it actually was cheaper in metallic

Have you got the sun protection pack as well?

If I had it in white a retrim of the leather to red would be in order

I think this is what sherekhan means about modding a 320si. Past car of the month on E90Post.

Yep thats the one (the Jap 320Si that is)

Wish mine looked that with all the decals - it'd look odd on the M4 but would be pretty cool as a co car. From what I understand BMW told stealers not to put decals on any AW cars. I think only Syntners sold any with the decals.

Not sure about the big wing at the rear but love the bucket seats and belts.

There is a whole gang out in Japan who have modded their 320si's

Sounds like you've got the sun protection glass on the rear - Looks good with AW. Make sure the paint hasn't got any damage if they are taking the decals off. Don't forget to check the torch and number of keys.

You should have two normal and one wallet key (key holder in glovebox - torch is here too)
