Sport mode/DS mode ?

Okay, I have an E92 330d Steptronic, and this is the first time I`ve owned anything with a steptronic box........so ( pre-apology not withstanding ), has anyone noticed a major difference in how the car performs in Sport mode, as opposed to "normal" mode ?

The only difference I can see is that at higher speeds, when Sport mode is engaged, the box seems to select a lower gear, thus making any engine inputs more responsive.

Is it just me that cannot see any great change, am I doing something wrong, or is there some sort of malfunction with my steptronic box ?? (the latter option does not seem feasible, as the car goes like bloody stink, whenever I ask it too, no matter what mode I`m in........)

The S mode will hold the gears longer so when it changes up you will be at a higher rpm and in the right power band.

It is only different modes for the gearbox, nothing more than that.

Cheers gizze.

I wondered if there was more to it, say like in the Vauxhall VXR`s, where it increases engine response for less pedal travel, or similar.

Thanks for that, as it would seem that mine is functioning perfectly, as I first surmised with the performance it displays !

Beautifully summarised by gIzzE there. So yep, yours is perfectly normal.

Didn't know the VXR operated engine response as well - good feature.

Also holds gears longer on down changes, so more engine braking!

I wish it did adjust the throttle map too like the SPORT button does on the M3.

There are actually 4 gearbox modes:

In 'D' the car automatically switches between 'Extreme Economy' and 'Economy'.

In 'DS' it switches between 'sport' and 'extreme sport'.

The gearbox switches every time the car comes to a complete standstill based on driving style. The system monitors inputs from DSC+ including yaw, aceleration and braking to decide if you want a sporty drive or a gentle cruise.

Each mode is simply a gearbox map, so it does not affect throttle respomse etc.

Does this also apply to pre "efficiency dynamics" (I think that is pre MY 08) models please?

I can't say I've noticed any differences, but rarely use anything other than "D" and the two different maps there may perhaps not be obvious unless you are looking for them?

The 4 gearbox maps apply to all steptronic cars. More info here:

Thanks for that. Unfortunately neither IE7 or Firefox will open or download those for me, but you have answered the question

The box is adaptive, i've noticed it holds onto gears longer in D after some hard driving
BTW, i prefer driving hard in D rather than DS! Have 500 Nm of torque so think it holds onto gears too long in DS ie out of best torque band?

No, I show up as a guest on that forum. If anyone really wants it, I'll stick it on my web site.

Don't bother just for me, though many thanks for the kind offer.

I have had the original question I asked answered anyway.

Bit puzzled as to why it doesn't show OK, but guess it must be to do with security settings (firewall) or something as neither IE7 nor Firefox will open it.

Anyway - going - so I'll stop

Excellent reply, NFS; very informative.

I didn`t know the box did any of this, and I just presumed it was perhaps a way of holding gears longer (which I suppose it does), but there`s obviously a lot more electronic trickery going on than we sometimes realise.

Shame the pdf links won`t open for me either, but thanks for your efforts mate; much appreciated.
