Passenger cupholder mishap
Well, I'm glad it was the wife who broke her car first She set a cup of champurrado in the passenger cup holder as she was getting in (I drive when we go somewhere together) and SMACKED her knee. Well, the champurrado stayed in the cup, but some little spring went flying off the cup holder, and now it will not close. I took a look, could not figure out why it wouldn't move back in, and couldn't get the spring back on. I looked in the glove box and couldn't see any access point.
I'm worried this is a $20-30 part (replacement cup holder) but would have to remove the dash and spend $2-300+ labor. Anyone know if jammed cup holders are covered under warranty, or have any knowledge on their replacement from previous models? |

well definitely not under warranty. Perhaps the dealership may do you a good will replacement but i think it shouldn't be that much of a big job that would cost a lot to replace. Always ask dealer first.

I feel your pain! It happened to us this past weekend, although ours didn't break. I thought that it was a stupid place to put the cupholders the very first time I saw the e90, but since I wasn't buying it for the cupholders, I let it slide.
Well, of course the wife always likes to have a drink with her, and bang, just like I figured would happen, she slammed her knee on it getting out. I can just see some German engineer laughing right now (so zee Americans have to have zer cupholders, eh!). |

We have these in our e46s. I'm sure it wouldn't be to hard to get them into an e90. They work great! |

Thank you; my Double Big Gulp problem is solved!!! Now has anyone found a way to install a decent popcorn holder?! By decent I simply mean the normal large bucket from your local movie theater. I have no idea how those stupid engineers expect us to watch movies and DVD's in this car without providing those basics!!

Oh, are you guys part of the "our german cars are for driving and shouldn't have cupholders anyway" crowd?
Well, this thread is probably not for you. The idea here is that someone posts a problem/question and if someone can help then great. Sorry for picking the picture with the big gulp in it! Jeez, a couple of smartasses and one woman-hater. Don't make me send a link of this thread to your wife! |

Hey, I'm only joking (for the most part). If the car is only for driving, then it shouldn't have many other options, so cup holders are by no means frivolous in comparison. I do want my car to have reasonable cup holders.
I simply find it funny when people put so much emphasis on them and this has become a running joke here. I wasn't poking fun at anyone in this thread -- most comments seemed completely appropriate (except for the one about women and their "freaking" drinks). |

Usually, the engineers put cupholders on german cars as an afterthought. The Japanese figured out American tastes awhile ago -- have you seen how many cupholders are in a Sienna? This really is a great product (if you care about that sort of thing) and holds many sizes of containers through spirited driving. And, worse-case scenario, it spills on the floormat. The cupholders are poorly placed and I feel your pain. This will not be the first time we will hear about broken passenger side cupholders.
better? |

They had that thing installed behind the seat on a 86 crx on Pimp My Ride because the guy had a liver transplant or something and needs water constantly. But with that, you're just asking for someone to fill it up with some crown and coke and take DUI to a whole new level.

Once I can get the thing back into its little cage in the dash, I just might glue it in there and then get one of those ultimates. So far the driver's one has been OK, if a little funny in the way it comes out and it's placement. They do hold a venti from Starbucks, but not the litre bottles of water that are rolling all around in the car now.
P.S. I took all the joking as simply that. |

I love this E90 Ultimate Hydration retrofit kit. It eliminates the need for cup holders completely and it comes with 5 discreet rubber tubes (since it's a 5-passenger car). It fits nicely through the standard (US) moonroof!
