symptoms

I have 16k miles on my '08 (sept/07 build) 335i coupe. The only problem I've had previously is a dead battery cell which was no biggie...dealer replaced the battery.

I chugged into the dealership today with these symptoms:

1.) long(er) crank
2.) engine malfunction, reduced power
3.) service engine soon
4.) heavy, erratic shaking and shuddering
5.) engine sounded like a union pacific train with loud pumping sound
6.) because of 4 + 5, decide to turn-off the engine or sometimes it just stalls before
7.) after reset, the car becomes drivable but symptoms will reoccur.
8.) able to recreate problem when i mash the gas

Pretty sure it's the fuel pump, will see what the dealer says on Monday. Hopefully the new pump is available now since it's September and the '09s should be rolling off the line, if indeed they have redesigned it.

Sounds like a fuel pump. All too common the last couple years

This is the part that I can't figure out - i.e. whether there even IS a new fuel pump design, or whether this is just a wishful fantasy....

Or if the 09's would be compatible with your 08...

Update:

ok, picked up the ride last night. they had it for 3 days. they did replace the fuel pump after trying to fix it via a software update (i believe...see invoice below). initial reaction: 1) the car sounds much deeper 2) before i use to be able to hear the turbo spooling around 1500-2200, i have not been able recreate this yet 3) when i floor it, the car does not seem to pick up as fast as before. but all this could just be in my head...also, not sure if i got the lastest and greatest HPFP, no one i talked to could answer if there indeed is a new design (sales & service).

comments?

I love the final comment in the dealer report:
"Working at manufacturer specs"

I know you are joking (at least a little bit).....

Seriously, though. All of BMW's marketing materials talk about torque peak of 300 starting at 1500 rpm. If the turbo spool has indeed been as negatively impacted by the software update as people report, shouldn't BMW have to revise their marketing material? BMW USA's long E90 LCI press release also mentioned this.....
