American Highways have become the Autobahn amid the COVID-19 Crisis

With the roads emptying, its a free for all out there. I have never seen so many people speeding. Not complaining. Stay safe.

My wife just drove from Des Moines to Denver yesterday (coming back from her brother's funeral).

She said there were cops EVERYWHERE along the drive on the interstate.

Have fun, but be smart.

Traffic is way down and speed is way up. York Regional Police have laid twice as many stunt racing tickets this March than March 2019. Stunt racing is defined as 30 MPH over the speed limit. Gets your car impounded for 7 days, 30 immediate licence suspension and fine up to $10K.

If they have the right to give you a ticket for "too fast for conditions", and they do, they should give you a pass when conditions are obviously in favor of speeding, meaning they don't quite fit the criteria the speed limit was made for. I'm not talking about going 120, but 99 on an empty Interstate is nothing, especially given the cars we drive.

In my neck of the woods I’ve noted State in there usual spots but without their radar on. I’ve been going for lots of drives lately, and have never seen such a lack of radar screening going on. Only thing I can think of is that they don’t want to have people speaking/vaporizing on them.
I would avoid that too, especially if they’re not supplied with even simple masks. When I’m on and they come in my ED with various stellar citizens, I always give them a mask on their way out.

I noticed less speed-traps setup but there aren't as many drivers to trap now. Half of those I see have the radar off and so they so appear less confrontational.

I’m north of Syracuse and have to say the 81 has not slacked off with its volume. Commercial truck traffic is as expected and unchanged. I am surprised at the amount of Canadian license plates on the 81 even though there are numerous public service illuminated signs messaging ‘Essential Border Crossings Only’.

I had a Tennessee State Trooper tell me they won't write speeding tickets unless it's a crazy speed. They are not advertising it, of course, but the powers that be deemed the health of the officers to be more important than a few dollars in the coffers.

Went to Costco this morning and the lack of traffic looks like 5 am on a Sunday morning.

I don't know about any Autobahn... Troopers were out in force today. Went for a short drive, just cause... And seen about 5 with 3 having stopped vehicles on the side. My Uniden was going bezerk!

A very high Semi to car ratio... Probably TP deliveries

I drove 19 hours straight last Thursday from Miami back to my home in St. Louis. My office in Miami shut down and we all went remote, so I'd rather be back out in the burbs of St. Louis where I think it's much safer than Miami.

I left at 3:45PM Eastern, and rolled into my garage in STL at around 10:45AM Eastern time. Basically 19 hours on the dot.

Was an easy drive in the M4, but as others have said, almost zero traffic. Of course, I went through all the major cities at night (Atlanta/Chattanooga/Nashville) and just happened to pass downtown St. Louis right after morning rush hour. It was an absolute breeze, only times I needed to hit the brakes were for gas and restroom breaks. Much of that journey forces trucks to stay out of the left lane, which is a massive help.

When/if I go back to Miami, I'll do it in two days most likely.

I'm actually driving slower than usual, figured since most of the highways are empty, it's not hard for them to get a radar/lidar reading on some speeding German sedan. The state is running hotter than usual so to speak and probably could use some extra dinero for the relief efforts. So why wouldn't some stuck up in a BMW pay his fair share and contribute, lol?
That said, seems like everybody is either driving slowly like myself or flying at 90+. I did see a few police cars today, though, doesnt look like they all went into hiding. I also saw more car crash debris on the roads than usual, so maybe people are speeding and crashing

Cops are still out there, but not pulling people over for basic shit. You gotta do something really bad. I've been having a blast. I was at a light next to a cop yesterday & got a little wheel in the HC (Not on purpose) & thought for sure I will now be pulled over. Nope, he went on his way.

Also, still way too much traffic where I am & I keep getting behind the moron slow drivers.

Don’t forget revenue is drying up in this situation. With fewer drivers you are easy to pick out and help line locality or state government pockets.

My fellow Wazers have diminished, not giving adequate heads up for 5-0. Not to worry. If I'm pulled over, hacking up a lung out the window could prove to be an effective deterrent.

I'll take the speeders over the absolute stupidity. It blows my mind the number of times this week I have seen people blowing dead red lights. It has been several per day, every day. Anything from someone being in the left turn only lane and going straight through a dead red to someone on a one lane each way road being the 5th car in line for a light, passing into oncoming traffic lane to make a right around all the cars waiting for said light. WTF?

And social distancing doesn't seem to apply to cars. Please explain why if there is no one on the road, two cars are neck and neck doing 30 mph in a 50mph holding up the entire flow.

Breathe.. Rant over.

You know that for the overwhelming majority of jurisdictions, it costs more to enforce traffic than they can collect in fines, right?

I have conducted the research.
