N52 Long Crank, Eventual Start, Low Fuel Pressure
Hey all!
Thanks for all the wealth of knowledge I've received over the years on this forum, it's much appreciated. But, now I need your help for my specific issue... 2007 328i N52 Engine Manual Transmission *Became slow to start (like 10 seconds cranking) a few days ago. Got worse the next day and ran battery down. Recharged battery. Now you may be able to start it, but it takes 3-4 start sequences before it will cough and start. It does catch a couple times in the attempts. *Once started, it will restart no problem as long as it isn't left too long (an hour or so). But if left to sit, it will struggle to start again. *Fuel Pressure test results: - Low (5-10psi) when hooked up - Open door, shoots up to 40psi and holds - Cranking goes to ~70psi - 15 mins after shut off - 60psi - 30 mins after shut off - 45psi - Overnight - 5-10psi again Obviously it sounds like a fuel issue. But not sure which part to look at as most that have this problem are N54's. Not sure if it is to note, but I have noticed some surging and struggling in gears 3-6 and heavy throttle. So possibly injectors? Not sure how to test that. Any help? Thanks!!! |

I had a bad battery when I had similar problems. Just check it before you start chasing other alternatives.

Totally separate from the pump. It’s the fuel pressure regulator and fuel level float on one piece if I’m remembering correctly.

Though I’m pretty sure I had a fuel smell when mine went bad. I think it cracks and fuel vapors leak out causing the smell and the pressure leak. If the car sat it would have a long crank, but would start right up if it was just running.

I had the same symptoms and it was my fuel pressure regulator. The job was easy. Just be sure your tank is as empty as possible.
Order an extra fuel pump. The nipple on the fuel pump has a habit of breaking when you disconnect the fuel hose. If it breaks, you'll have a fuel pump ready to go. If it doesn't, you can return the new pump and you'll only be out $10-$20 in shipping. |
