Suspension spring slipped 🤬

Hey guys. So apparently my e92 335i suspension took a dump today. I has sport suspension with koni yellow struts. The spring on the front driver's side is now off of the perch. I am unsure if the perch bent, broke, or if the spring just slipped off. My question is, can I use any perch for this make and model or do I need to buy a new strut. Because I cannot seem to find an actual koni yellow struts spring perch, but I do see other makes such as URO. Anyone ever had this issues, how did you solve? I've added a few pics from the drives side and one from the past side which is normal. Thanks.

That's wild. What can even cause that? Did it slip off the bottom or top?

I don't even know how it happened. It's crazy. It slipped from the bottom..
I was driving and all of a sudden I felt it slip then felt the rubbing of the sprint every full turn of the wheel.

You will need a new strut, shims, and possibly a spring. I've never seen that before. Honestly, consider yourself lucky it did not go through your tire or rip a brake line. Could be worse.

Yeah I know. Was actually coming out of a parking spot when it happened. I mean everything else looks ok I guess. Just the perch is shit. You really think I need a complete replacement? I mean I was going to do it eventually, just a little sooner than I expected. Kind of a bad time.

Garage List
Looks like the bottom coil of the spring broke. Not surprising given their condition

Didn't look like it. Those are DINAN springs their Shorter. But I will definitely check again in the morning. Thinking of getting a cheapo set to use for about 3 weeks. Then I will redo with another set of koni/DINAN springs

Plus I didn't see any spring bits on the ground when it happened.

Your spring snapped. You can see the piece still sitting on the perch (pic 1 & 2).

By the way why are the springs so excessively compressed on this setup?

That's a good question.. I will need to ask my lil bro. He had the car for a 2 months period while I was away, and when I came back, I noticed a bunch of changes handling wise.smh.

Then again.. the springs may have been like that for longer. Since I remember him saying he adjusted them about 5 months ago.

Confirmed.. it definitely snapped.
Thinking I can just replace the shims, mounts and springs on both side until I can order some coil overs in a few weeks.
I will pull them and try and clean what ever rust I can in prefer to salvage anything worth it until a can get this coilovers ordered.

So I ordered some coil overs. But they won't be here til June 3rd. And Boone on my area has sport springs. But an auto parts store near has the strut and spring, but not for sport suspension for 75 bucks a piece. Could I use those til my coilovers get here? Has anyone used non sport shocks on a coupe that originally came with msport suspension?

It'll raise the height of the front end and won't feel as planted as the sport suspension. It won't be a problem and it'll drive OK to get around, but it's less than ideal. Riding higher may affect your alignment too, which may cause a little extra tire wear.

Do you need to drive your car before the new struts arrive? It's a pain to have to install struts/springs only to do the whole job over again in a few weeks.

Nah not driving it. It's been parked up, I've been using my Q5 to get around. Big and bulky but it gets me to where I need to be. I bought some BC coils from fleabay, but then the seller shaded me and canceled my order because of a pricing error. (According to him) and then raised the priced 300 bills and sent me an offer for 275 more than what I paid before. so I decided to go the cheapo route for a lil while.

Got some of these.. I haven't heard or read anything negative about them so far. So I will see how they hold up. If they do then why not keep em. If they don't then I would have had enough time to get some KW coils. Dealer wanted more than what I paid for these just for the driver side, plus they tried to convince me on labor. GTFOH.. These coilovers were less than 525.00 shipped. Not bad especially since my whole suspension needs to be refreshed. I think these will be ok for the time being. Not tracking the car, just a lil spirited streeting here n there..

Those look more than just fine for the time being. I haven't heard anything bad about those either and considered them myself.

I installed cheap SenSen brand strut assembies (complete strut, spring already installed) back in September and my car is driveable but not great They're pretty bouncy. It's very noticeable on rough roads, but especially after I stop. It doesn't bounce like my old 90s GM cars with blown struts, rather after coming to a stop the front end has a few short oscillations. Also the driver's side nut holding the strut in the top mount came loose once causing a rattle/chatter when going over bumps. Easily fixed, but not something I would have expected to have to do to a new strut assembly.

My plan is to replace them with Bilstein B4 and OEM E90 sport springs.

Yeah man. They are actually really good so far. Feel comfortable. 32 dampening settings. They went on really easy. But man what a b**** to get them koni's off.. 🤦🏽*♂️ they were seized in there really good. Had to bang them out from the bottom (there's a joke in there somewhere). Took for ever because I couldnt get a long enough throw with the wrench I was using as a hammer. Plus the spring was stuck. 😔 But I got them in. Only did the front since I only had a couple hours before my girl gets home, and she hates when I'm doing something that doesn't involve something for her. I will get the back on Saturday morning. My only issue so far is, now I need to buy another strut bar. Because the dampening knob is a lil too high and won't let the bar sit flush enough to righted. I will grab a few washers for the time being. Gonna order one on sat morning when I search for a good one that will fit. Love Bilstein. I have an 98 540i oxford green. And the fit is just perfect to me. The way it sits. 😁

Are these the Megan Racing coils? Where did you find them at that price?

Did you use strut Clevis speeder or no? If no that is the reason you struggle to get them off.

For the strut bar you can use washers and longer bolt to clear the adjustment knob.
