N52 engine oil temp 250-260F

Retrofitted a temp gauge (cluster swap) but I’m seeing 250-260f operating temp. Is this normal?

Seems a bit high to me.

I’m in nyc so it’s about 60-80 degrees right now.

I read somewhere that the oil temp should be close to the water temp at normal operating driving conditions.

mine sits at 210 unless I'm being spirited.
I've never seen it higher than 240-250.

my guess is the gauge needs to be adjusted.
you need a can cable and perfekt toolbox.

With a simple OBDII tester you can measure coolant temperature, and correlate to oil temp.

Also, after car has sat overnight, measure oil temp and compare to the ambient temperature. They both should be the same.

well then you obviously have inpa setup if you use perfekt toolbox.

ask it what the oil temp is and compare.

Driving around today during a rare 95F day here, and the oil temp stayed pegged at 240. I retrofitted the oil temp gauge, and coded it with Perfekt Toolbox.

Cheers!

So it seems I am definitely running hot? Temp gauge is spot on.

This is at idle and holding revs at 2k after 10 mins. During spirited driving I get a little bit past that 3/4 tick which by my math is 265F+.

Use these values in perfekt toolbox:

71, 96, 121, 146, 171

I calculated these values to match the 160 250 340 oil temp gauge (like 335s or E92 328s)

I don’t think it’s a gauge calibration issue, the car seems to be running hot

Hard to tell with the data above imo. The temp in your pics show its around 230F-240F

You're seeing temps like that on a metal valve cover N52? Seems off. My 330i runs at around 200f, 215 at the most during hard driving. Later plastic valve cover N52s tend to run hotter, but they also warm up quicker which is of benefit. On the blacktop, 250 is perfectly normal, but I'm not sure about your situation.

However... with correct coolant temperatures, and no oil cooling system, I I fail to see too many ways that it can simply run hotter than other engines of identical specification. What does oil temp read with the engine off, and cold?

Woah, I've never seen my 330xi run at 200F after hard (or even regular) driving in the summer

I’m in nyc so it’s about 60-80 degrees right now.
porsche959 - consider monitoring water pump speed and coolant temp as you drive. Perhaps dying WP or failing thermostat could be one of the reasons of higher oil temps (insufficient cooling). WP may not be able to maintain rpm's during cooling cycle.

My E91N (N52K) oil temp stays in range between 97-110C when fully warmed up (20+ minutes of driving). I live in SF, outside temps here is 60-80F in the city year around.

Coolant (not oil) temp behaviour should be as follows:
- sprinted driving - 77C-97C
- flat, constant speed - 97-110C

Water pump operating range is between 39-250rpm.
AC on expect it to be > 200rpm (mine just stays at max of 250rpm)

AC off:
- sprinted driving - cooling down (to low 80C target): 170-250rpm
- sprinted driving - warming up (from low 80C to 97C) : > 40rpm
- flat, constant speed: varies, usually ~ 140rpm

my 328 has no oil cooler.

at 70F ambient and running down the road it's at 220ish

if beating on it for 10 minutes, 245.

I have never seen oil temps higher than 250.

at 30F it runs at coolant temp.
it is an xi so I do have an aluminum pan.
