Looking for a new truck
So I know some of you guys have to be truck guys. Looking to get a new used truck. Not a fan at all of any non American truck so dont suggest a Toyota or Nissan. Not a Ram fan either.
Mainly looking at 2014+ GMC Sierra, 2015+ F150 and 2012+ ford raptor. Opinions? Leaning towards the GMC, have not test driven any yet however I've driven a couple 2019 F150 EcoBoost and 5.0 Will be SLT Denali or Lariat King Ranch Platinum.

As a owner of a small fleet of F150s and F250s I would go with the Fords. I've had every brand and most sizes and only the Fords have handled the tasks and wear the best. I usually get about 230-250k miles before taking them out of service. Just sold a f150 with 200k and it was still a great truck. Just recently picked up a new 250 with the Boss 6.2l and man is the truck fun to drive. Endless power and the sound is heavenly!
While GMC is nice their trucks have too many blind spots imo and I don't like the dealer service compared to Ford. If I were you I would get the Platinum F150 but with out the ecoboost if possible. The normal engines get great mpg with out the extra crap that will service you to death in the future. That said I have to look at things a little different. Hope this helps! |

Well if you are considering GMC you should really be open to the comparable Chevy models in order to have the widest choice.
It's hard to go wrong with pretty much any full size GM or Ford pickup.

I have an F350 now but had an F150 5.0 Platinum before that. First truck I ever owned. I went and looked at the RAM but I didn't care for the interior and overall look so I dismissed it. Then I went and drove the GMC first and then the Ford. As someone who had never driven a truck before and really had no desire to have a truck (just needed it to tow) the Ford was sooooo much better it wasn't even funny. As soon as I drove the F150 I knew it was the one. The ride on the GMC was very truck like and rough compared to the F150. I also found the interior and features on the F150 Platinum much better than the GMC Denali.
I reeeeeaaallly liked my F150 and would buy another in a heartbeat. Only reason I trade it for the F350 was because we got a bigger RV and it was just too much for the F150. Even then we hauled it from FL up to Maine and back with that F150. It was sketchy when it got windy, but it still managed to get it done! |

No plans for towing with it. Already have a 2013 F350 powerstroke.
This truck will be my daily driver. Trying to stick with a V8 as good as the EcoBoost is, it simply will be more costly to repair in the long term due to more parts and turbos. As far as fuel efficiency I'm surprised to see that people are stating the ford is more efficient. Regarding the GMC vs Chevy thing. They're basically the same truck however I prefer the appearance of the GMC better. No other reason however if I'm spending the money I'd rather get the truck I like the looks of better. I definitely like the gmc styling better than the ford but I've driven the fords and they're quite nice to drive. I am slightly worried about the reliability of the ford. My last F150 (was a 5.4 3v) had lots of issues. However I daily a 04 expedition right now with 218k and I'd drive it across country without fear. My powerstroke mechanically has been reliable but I've had some electrical issues which kind of worries me given it's a newer truck like what I'm shopping for. Ford would likely be a 5.0 Not driven a new 5.3 or 6.2 would I be satisfied with the 5.3 knowing how powerful the 5.0 is or should just look for a 6.2?

Can't go wrong with pretty much any 1/2 ton in those years if you aren't towing or hauling heavy things. Pick the one you like that has the comfort and features you want.
In the GMC, the 5.3 and 6.0 are bulletproof. Since you aren't towing, the 5.3 will be great. I don't know the Fords, but if I had a choice today, I would get a Ford Platinum over a GMC Denali. Not a fan of Rams but that is not fact based, just my preference. I drive a 2015 Chevy 2500HD with the 6.0. It's a work truck and a beast, but for a daily, it can be bone jarring on bad roads. In the DFW area, it was great as the roads are luxurious. Here in OH, it's ok. In NYC, it would cause internal bleeding. But I need it to tow my 10,000 lbs fifth wheel and haul heavy things. I would rather have a 1/2 ton for a daily for sure.

I might load the bed with a couple dirt bikes or a 4 wheeler, maybe pull a trailer with my golf cart or light duty stuff but otherwise if it's anything heavy I'll use the diesel. Like you i have a 5th wheel but mine weighs 13,500lbs so the f350 isn't going anywhere but it's a huge truck and ride is harsh unloaded. I'm in OH as well the roads aren't great haha
I'm really leaning towards the gmc I'm worried about the paint being thin and given it'll be my first GM reliability of electronics and non engine components that I know nothing about.

I absolutely love the look of the raptor and its capability. It's just hard to find one nearby for a decent price and I worry about it being beat on. If I can find one I like close enough I wanna test drive it. What is your insurance cost like? Any different from a regular f150?

Love the Gen 1 Raptor and currently have a ‘19 Agate Black and a great stable mate to my M. IMHO, it’s a bit overpriced, but so far a great truck. There doesn’t seem to be a difference with insurance as it’s classified as a 4x4 F150. Find a good one and pull the trigger! |

I'm a former truck guy - F150 and F250 diesel for a combined 22 years and 380,000 miles of ownership.
What are your towing and hauling requirements? Diesel is king in this area. If diesel is not required, forget the gas hog V8s and look at the modern highly efficient engines. I am a Ford guy. GM trucks are also fine for millions of people. |

Gas may be cheap right now but not very long ago it was over $3/gallon and that adds up.
Towing i stated that i already have a diesel truck. Im looking for something to drive everyday and use for light duty truck needs. I prefer the V8 options for reliability. Longterm i think the ecoboost options will need more maintenance given my previous experiences with multiple turbo vehicles. Given the GM uses cylinder deactivation they dont seem to be that much of gas hogs unless you put your foot in it.

I see so many people comparing the F-150 to the GMC but hardly any mentions of the silverado. My business partner has a Chevy Silverado 1500 and its a very comfortable truck. We've spent hours in there on trips and the chair like seating position provided lots of support for your back and legs even after hours of driving (even with the cloth seats).
It's pretty quiet inside and is not jarring like an old school straight axle truck would be over bumps. As for capabilities, we just put about a yard and a half of semi wet soil in the bed of it and it handled the weight fine. Overall, I think it's a great truck with the one drawback being fuel economy. But that being said, it's a truck so don't expect honda civic numbers lol. Also, my brother in law and father in law both have F-150's. Both trucks also are very comfortable but I would say less quiet inside than the Chevy. AS for towing or weight, it's right on par with the chevy (both 1500's) so you're not losing or gaining much in that aspect by going with one or the other. My Brother in law has the Eco boost motor and his fuel economy still isn't "all that". Hope this helps
