lens choices??

so i am borrowing a friends, 24-105 f/4L IS from canon. sick lens so far. i am on vacation and loving it, yes both the lens and vaca in amsterdam () . my quesion for you guys is what lens are you using for the car shots mostly?

my concern is with an f/4 i wont be able to decrease the depth of field enough to blur out the backround unless im close to the max zoom or the car is from the backround. but at meets that can be hard to do. i have an 18-55 f/2.8-5.6 that came with camera as a kit lens and kinda sucks compared to the 24-105.

any sugestions from the more experienced guys?

thats what i was using last yea when i went to egypt. great combo for a sunny out door place. but the lens got some crap in it i cant get out and its spotting the pics, so i have to replace it. and im pretty much sold on the 24-105 as a new walk around lens. just curious if any of you guys had experience using it with shooting cars and meets? i cant go crazy and get a fixed prime lens and a new zoom lens at the same time if i plan to not take too much shit from the wife.

At f/4 you should still have a very limited depth of field, provided (as you noted) that the background is not very close to the car. Longer telephoto range will aid that. Another trick is to work your angles so that the car is being shot from a low or high position - making either the ground or the sky your backdrop.

If it's a digital you can proof your stuff right away and experiment.

I love my Canon 10-22 ultra wide angle. I am in the market for a zoom lens, probably the 70-200 f/2.8. These pics were taken with my 10-22 with a circulat polarizing filter which is an absolute MUST for any outdoor photography, cloudy sunny or whatever.

wow nice pics and cars. thanks for the tips, ill try to ake advantage of the sky more often in the shots. i think tho for what i want im gonna need a 2.8 with more of a low mm zoom, and will have to suck it up and do the best i can with a larger zoom & f/4

The 24-105L is a fine general purpose lens. If you really want narrow DOF though just pick up a cheap 50/1.8 that you can throw on when you need it. You can get narrower DOF with a longer telephoto, but it may be difficult for you to get all of a car in the frame that way. The best (though much more expensive) option is to pick up a fast wide prime. Something like the 24 or 35L would be ideal, but these are $1K+ lenses. More reasonably the 35/2 is only a couple of hundred bucks and may work well for you.

wow...

I see what you were talking about shooting down on the car helping the depth of field a lot there.

24-70mm f/2.8L.

I the 24-105 is one of the best walk-around lenses available for the Canon. IMHO, however, the 24-70mm is THE best everyday lens you can use. it's very versatile and can be used in almost any situation. it'll definitely give you that background blur you've been wanting.

Also, get the 10-22mm ultra wide angle to get amazing shots like ///M PWR 00 posted. that's definitely next on my list! that and the 70-200 f/2.8L IS.

i think im gonna go with the 24-105 f/4 for the general purpose for now. i do alot of traveling and need it more i think for that purpose. the wife hates if im swaping lens all day long while doing museums and out door stuff like the pyramids and such. it was perfect while walking in amsterdam last week.

so i guess ill get a cheap fixed prime or cheap ultra wide and take the hit on lesser glass for those lenses as ill be doing out door high light shots of cars.

I use the 28-70 F2.8 L. It's the older model of the 24-70 but its still great. Next up would be the 70-200 IS 2.8 L. With those 2 lens, you should be good. Or Canon just released the 18-200 IS F3.5 I think. Take a look at that if you want a good walk around lens.

I have a 17-40L F4 as my walk around lens. I also use it at times when i do automotive shoots and never really had a problem with the aperture being 4.

For car shoots, i would lean more towards the wide angle lenses. Canon 10-22, Tamron 12-24, Tokina 11-16 etc etc.

Yea I would love to have a wide angle lens. Starting to see why its so good to have one now. if you must get one wide angle to start out with, which one would it be?
