The dreaded knock

Is this the knock, we don't want to hear?

That does sound like rod knock IMO. Definitely a loud clunk/knock and speeds up with rev's

Listen under the car and see if it is louder.

Get a mechanic's stethescope and move around to confirm its from the bottom end.

Check oil pressure.

Pull the oil filter and inspect it for fine metal.

@ Cal96 ..... My opinion is don't run the motor anymore than needed... do what jeremy said about the oil filter/ drain the oil check for metal... but if that's the case hopefully you just have to drop the oil pan and replace the bearings...

what was typical oil change mileage on car?

when you put new oil in it and it gets quieter that's also a sign... .

What's the miles on it; anything done recently? Oil filter housing gasket replaced recently?
Curious to hear recent history

Hard to tell if this is rod knock without the engine being slowly revved up and down to around 3k rpms. Revving up and down like this will induce the knock, usually on the rev up.

If the rod is spun, the damage is already done and metal all throughout the motor.

won't know the history cause I bought it off my buddy knowing it had a knock. just done an oil change (from that video clip) also checked the filter and looks good. I guess he changed it before he sold it to me. I posted cause I wanted a confirmation. I will be listing to it underneath like Jeremy said. What else can make that sound? can you check oil pressure without a guage? My plan was to tackle the rod bearings myself but still 50/50 , lol 120k miles

Without hearing it in person, on some cars a loose spark plug can be mistaken as a rod knock at quick, I would start with getting under the car like Jeremy said and confirm it's down low, rod bearings aren't too bad of a job, when my pan gasket goes I'm doing the bearings to, the worst part is getting to them lol.

You can check oil pressure with any logging/monitoring program through OBD2

do these oil pans have a magnet in them? .. I googled and saw magnetic drain plug but think that was aftermarket... check all other possibilities and then pull the pan... start looking for a used motor as an option...

Cal96, what is year is your F30 and how many miles does it have?

Small percentage of N55 engines in 2013 model year have been affected by premature connecting rod bearing wear. It is a known issue and BMW replaced the engine if diagnosed at the dealer within the warranty period. The diagnostic is performed on the engine oil to identify excessive metal shavings.

Good point. If this is a non-EWG N55 (pre-2014 model year), it has the 1st gen rod bearings. The 2014+ EWG came with the beefier S55 rod bearings (and rods).
