RWD or AWD: Your preference and why?
Hi all,
I have recently ordered my first M4 a M4C RWD for expected March delivery. Very excited about that...!! Still I am wondering about your preferences regarding RWD vs AWD? My head is still thinking should I have waited for the AWD? 1) Are the expected differences RWD vs AWD that much in daily driving in warm weather or what is your experience with the previous F82 RWD? 2) Is the added traction and expected better performance more in the 0-100km/h area or also in the 80-120km/h, 100-200km/h area, which I would think is the more frequent use case in daily driving? 3) I know we have no real performance data as of today but whats your estimation comparing the two drivetrains and how do previous F82 drivers look at the drivetrain question? I will do a short term lease so the choice of RWD/AWD is not that important to maybe buying the car. Still wanted to know what your drivetrain choice looks like with the facts we currently have... Thanks for your feedback & happy holidays...!! |

From a dig, AWD will be faster, without a doubt. However, from a roll, good chances are the RWD will be faster due to the added weight and drivetrain loss/inertia of the AWD. Around a dry track, RWD will likely also have an edge due that lower weight and better weight distribution.
That being said, I would say that AWD is the better option for a daily driver as the added weight will not be perceptible at sane public road speeds and will be more than offset by the practicality of the added traction.

AWD for me too. It'll be my first AWD performance car and I'm looking forward to hard acceleration from a stop. I expect it'll be slightly slower from a roll (over 30 or 40mph) but I'm not buying it to win high speed races. Just want to have fun at sensible speeds and try an AWD performance car before eventually going EV.

And since few of these cars will ever be tracked, AWD will be a better choice for most drivers.

RWD, especially for this platform since that's the only way to get 6MT.
Where I live, it snows maybe once a year or every 2 years, and everything shuts down anyway. I also think these cars are complicated enough as is without having more drivetrain parts. However, if you live somewhere with actual winters, AWD would make this car even more useable, so I completely understand.

this will be the first RWD performance car for me .... tho admittedly if it was available at the same time or if I wasn't cut the deal that I was offered, then I'd have gone the xDrive route for sure. Just makes more sense, tho question mark remains on the upcharge for AWD variant. Dealers have no clue still I've heard guesses anywhere from 2k-7k lol
Not too worried about winter driving here given efficiency of snowplowing and lack of a commute fortunately. Only times I'd be worried is if there was snow on the ground and I'm stopped on a hill, but those situations are rare in Toronto area.

I heard at least 4k for the AWD in Germany (not officially confirmed). So I donīt know the market specific pricing setup but I would guess at least 4-6k USD and even more 6-8k CAD for AWD. Hope it is less for sure... |

2/3/4 series: xDrive adds +$2,000 over the equivalent RWD model 5 series: xDrive adds +$2,300 over the equivalent RWD model 7 series: xDrive adds +3,000 over the equivalent RWD model 8 series: xDrive adds +2,900 over the equivalent RWD model ==> looking at the above data my guess is M xDrive on the G80/G82 would cost +$3k to +4k over RWD Also when comparing M5C vs. X5MC pricing: M5C starts at $111,100 X5MC starts at $114,100 The X series is positioned at +$3,000 higher than an M5C (not looking at what comes as standard equipment in this vs. that) When comparing M3C RWD vs. X3MC pricing: M3C RWD starts at $72,800 X3MC starts at $76,900 ($4,100 higher than the M3C RWD) One would think based on the M5C vs. X5MC data that the M3C M xDrive would not be positioned higher than the X3MC! ==> based on this logic my guess is M xDrive on the G80/G82 would cost +$3k to +4k over RWD But who knows what BMW is thinking I'll be really pissed off if BMW tries to sell us M xDrive at >$4k on the G80/G82! That'll probably steer me away from buying one

Going AWD.
Had my F80 for a few winters with a good winter tire setup...had no major issues but as a true daily with kids in the car, would still opt for AWD for the added peace of mind.

AWD and all-season tires for me. I will not be taking it to a track, live in Chicago and don't want to be swapping out wheels every six months.

Congratulations!! So I've gone back and forth on this as well:
I recently put in an order for an M4C with anticipated delivery in April. After going back-and-forth and back-and-forth, I decided to stay with RWD. Reason being is this: 1. Plain and simple and most importantly - I think RWD vehicles are more fun to drive. They are more of a drivers car in my opinion. I've driven several AWD vehicles in my life, and recently an M440i. The grip was amazing and it was crazy quick, but here's the thing, it wasn't as fun. The car did more of the driving than I did and I felt that it took away from the experience of owning an M series BMW. 2. I could honestly care less about 0 - 60 times, I figured that 0.1 sec of a difference isn't really going to make that much of a difference in my life. Moreover, beating some random guy in some random car next to me off the line isn't really going to do anything for me either. Now if that's your thing, more power to you and I would go AWD. 3. The reason why I fell in love with M series BMWs in the first place is because they are our RWD. If I wanted a ridiculously fast AWD car I would have gone for a Porsche or Nissan GTR years ago. 4. I don't live in the world of the fast and the furious. I'm not street racing. I don't need to take corners 1,000,000 mph and I don't care to. 5. I will never drive the car in winter. Plain and simple. I live in Colorado and the last thing I will do is take it out when there's any precipitation on the ground. This is my Sunday going to meeting car so to speak. I'm buying the car to have fun driving and I love BMWs. Not to be the fastest, not to smoke people, not to be in the fast and the furious. BUT if you drive in winter and want to smoke people off the line, get AWD. Hope this helps!! Enjoy!!! |
