DSC Malfunction and SAS module

So i've been dealing with DSC Malfunction on my '08 335i for about two years and I decided that I'm gonna fix it this year.

I pulled the code from the DSC module and I got a 5E46 steering-angle sensor plausibility. i try clearing it, but it does not clear or it comes back right away.

I decide to get my scanner in live data mode and watch the steering angle at steering wheel. It is at -0.05 and never changes even after I turn steering wheel from lock to lock (this should also reset or init the steering angle sensor). For kicks, I hooked up the same scanner to my 535i and did verify that the steering wheel does change the value of "steering angle at steering wheel". I'm thinking bad PC board or solder joints.

I've been reading that it's a common issue for the disk under the optical eye or lens in the SAS (Steering angle sensor) module to be filthy and need a cleaning, but if that was the case I should be getting erratic readings vs no reading at all.

Earlier today I did remove the SAS module from behind the steering wheel and opened it up. To my surprise, the disk under the optical sensor or lens was in pristine condition.

I decided to just order a used SAS unit from ebay, but now I have to figure out how to code it to my car. Has anyone bought a used SAS and coded it to their car? Would INPA do the trick?

Also, I have a week before the used SAS off an 09 335i arrives. In the meantime, anyone have any ideas or suggestions on getting my current SAS unit to work?

Thanks!

There are a zillion threads about this - Search is your friend.

In any case, easy to do calibration in Tool32. Load the DXC_90.prg file, execute job "lenkwinkel_dsc_abgleichen". I believe that DXC_90 is the file you'll want to load for 08 335i.

However, if you are replacing the whole SZL, which is what I gather you will be doing, you might have to first code it using NCSExpert. I believe it takes its coding from the ABS module so default code DSC.

Yes, I have searched and there is not many threads about replacing the SAS. Mostly about cleaning it. I found only two useful threads.

UPDATE: I just searched SLZ and found more info. Thanks!

But thanks for your reply. I will try your suggestion and I appreciate the info.

Yes, I'm replacing the entire SZL.

I am also thinking about getting protools which I assume will code and recalibrate my SAS sensor.

Gary

Hey Gary, you can go to the protools Facebook and ask your questions. They have really good support and you'll have your answer from above (about protools and its functions about SAS). Their website, i believe their Facebook is at the bottom of the main page (great support) - bimmergeeks.net
