Do I have to worry about the rear sliding out?

I've had two 4-series before my g82 both x-drive. I have read a lot about the m cars being very temperamental, especially the 2 wheel drive ones. My dealer even warned me to be very careful when coming out of a corner.

I'm 900 miles in and I have yet to feel like I'm losing any grip, any advice on when I should expect to lose traction or when I should be careful?

Not even really entirely sure why these cars are two wheel drive if the x-drive versions will have drift mode...kinda seems redundant

As long as you have traction control on and don't slam on the gas in a corner, you should be fine. I would highly suggest attending an HPDE event or some lessons so you can find out in a controlled environment. I think the investment is worth learning you and your cars limits vs crashing your car.

The joy of having a car like this is exploring the limits! Obviously this is something you want to start doing in a controlled and gradual way. Once you're familiar with the torque curve and the surface conditions it will become more fun and less anxiety provoking...

That being said, I live in a very wet area and have been driving quite a bit with traction control totally off. The traction limits are much higher on the G8X than I was expecting, so it may take a pretty aggressive throttle input to begin a slide. You're driving a *very* capable machine and as long as you respect the numbers, she'll repay you with some very fun driving experiences

Enjoy!

They snap out as quickly as you hit the accelerator.

Mash it -> it snaps and you poop yourself
Smoothly apply the gas -> it transitions smoothly

At least, that's based on the F82.

Although with the stability control on, it's pretty foolproof. In my short time with the G80s on track, I found you could just touch the limit and stay on it nicely even with stability control fully on - it'll let you slide just a tad so you know where the limit is.

Try slide it a little in an empty parking lot or somewhere safe if you get a chance, just so you know what it feels like. It can be pretty fun...

I haven't driven a G8x yet, but they seem to be more grounded than previous generations. My F80 is very tail happy and will chop your head off if you don't respect it. Especially in wet conditions or if DSC is off.

Ive test driven the RWD for 3 hours, and own an M140i (rwd 1 series with a lot less horsepower)...

The G80 handles the power so well it is unreal. Its like it is on rails, seriously great piece of kit.

The electronics do wonders and its a smile a minute. Just dont go crazy and get used to the car you.

Congrats on an awesome purchase btw:-)

Here's a separate question. I like to slide around a bit. Is that easy to do in MDM, or do you need to give it a ton of gas?

I don't know why there is an xdrive version if the rwd version has so much grip.

you can pour on the power.... This is one BMW that does not need the x-drive.... unless it is your only car and in frozen climates. Drove 2 30 minutes sessions in the rain at a HDPE event and never was it uncontrolled...

The cool thing is that BMW included a throttle pedal that allows drivers to apply as little or as much gas as they want. It isn’t an on/off switch. I wonder if other manufacturers have ever done that?

Yes, you do

Disable traction control and you certainly do, especially in the wet. Maybe the tires have a big impact on that but I find in the wet a pretty non-aggressive throttle breaks the rear tires loose

In the dry if you have decent driving skills and traction on you'll be fine

Don't do anything stupid in the wet the car isn't nearly as planted as awd

Great advice. Best mod I ever got was learning the limits of the car
