I'm not looking to squeeze any extra horsepower or theoretical advantage. I just don't want to throw any codes when I'm done. Is Delphi better than Bosch coils? NGK or Bosch plugs (if so what version). Who has an economical and reliable combo recommendation for me? Are there other brands to consider?

The newer Bosch coils aren't bad. The Delphi is still looked upon as the "better option." But I've had both and had a period where I had to use both in the same engine -- they were fine.
I would go with the NGK for the plugs -- after using both, I've had less issues with the NGK. |

I've always preferred NGK. Just plug your car's details into fcpeuro and use what they recommend if you aren't looking for anything other than OEM.

The longest lasting spark plugs are double platinum (platinum ground and center electrodes), which should last 90k miles per NGK:
12120032138 BOSCH FR7NPP332 Double Platinum 12120035915 NGK PLZFR6A-11S 5987 Laser Platinum NGK also has another "Laser Platinum" plug with a nickle ground electrode, which only lasts 40k miles: 12120037663 NGK LZFR6AP11GS 95712 Laser Platinum |

I would use NGK. Looking on Rock Auto it is interesting that Bosch and Delphi have two versions that list "Bosch unit" or "Delphi unit". Mine came with Bosch unit, when I replaced them NGK was not available. Now that I see it on Rock Auto, NGK is what I would use.
Spark plugs I pulled were NGK, and that was what went in. NGK's catalog lists for 2009 328i: https://ngksparkplugs.com/en/part-finder Laser Platinum Spark Plug PLZFR6A-11S NGK COP (Pencil Type) Ignition Coil Multi-Pack U5055-6 |

Has anybody tried the Ruthenium plugs? I like the idea of two fine wire tips, both ground and electrode. NGK calls this 'DFE', double fine electrodes; theoretically they should be easier to trigger a spark if your coil is marginal or weakening.
NGK LFR6AHX-S 94122 for N52 I think. I'll be installing a set in the next month or two, 65k miles on originals. |

The 07 N51 uses Laser Iridium and NOT the Laser Platinum in the 09. Must be another BMW cost cutting move with platinum. Therefore I doubt BMW is going to use rutheniums from the factory.
Anyway the "high ignitability" part of the ruthenium plug is interesting. I might try it, but I doubt I will feel it because Laser Iridium is already pretty good as far as the thin, durable electrode. Bosch does not make anything that advanced. https://ngksparkplugs.com/en/product...um-spark-plugs |

I have the original Bosch plugs and coils in my car at 135,000km. Normally I thought NGK is better but I pulled one plug and the tip looked to be in excellent and I measured very little wear. Normally at this mileage I'd expect them to look much worst so I'm sold on Bosch Platnium.

I went with this kit also. My existing coils/plugs seemed to be working fine, but at 100K the coils were OE and plug had 50K on them, so I said F it and replaced both. Engine ran a bit smoother, but I was not like "wow". Don't obsess about getting the "best" plugs or coils - Unless you are trying to do a monster 200+hp tune to your car, just focus on getting quality P's/C's. The above kit will serve you well.
