Water Leaking through Roof Speakers 2009 (E91)
2009 E91 M-Sport
I've searched and searched and have not found another thread like this. Every time I go through the car wash, water leaks out of the rear roof speakers. Speakers still work, but water leaks out at a pretty decent rate and soaks part of the headliner as well. I've checked the sunroof drain holes and they drain just fine. All seals look ok as far as the sunroof goes. I've put a thin bead of silicone around the sharkfin antenna and that did nothing. Has anyone had this problem before? |

Roof speakers? What are these roof speakers of which you speak? (I've never seen those)
Do you have roof rack rails? Could there be leaks around where those are attached? |

I don't have the speaker in the headliner but had a leak in a Similar area. My drains were indeed clogged. Also My sunroof apparently was not completely closing (looked closed). It may be possible that one of the tubes connecting the sunroof drains to the back of the wagon may have come loose.

Mine has those, I think its part of the upgraded L7 system. Ive gotta think its the sunroof drain, either a clog or a crack letting water through. Even if the sunroof seals look good a car wash can expose weaknesses. I always hand wash and the lower pressure keeps it from getting past it due to surface tension.

the roof speakers do not penetrate roof at all
so the water is coming from upper side and this can only be shark fin or panoramic roof

They started de contenting cars in 2010 .
In the normal sedan's it was no tweeters I wouldn't be surprised if the left out those speakers to. Seems kind of obvious you are going to have to take the liner out. Then it will be easy to see where it comes from . Also beware if it gets into your battery and amplifier area there will be further bad news. That was a dramatic video. There is level above logic 7 called Individual Audio almost no one get.
688 is just logic 7 minus rear tweeters. Which started in 2010. |

I'm on my way to an Individual Audio retrofit, but I've abandoned the idea of doing so via OEM electronics after reading this thread:
https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=637056 OP: You have a super rare and cool audio system, you definitely want to pull the headliner and the sunroof to figure out what is leaking and repair any damage. Also, thanks for the first pics I've EVER seen of the headliner speakers in beige. I have the parts on the way, but had no idea what they'd look like |

Thanks, Fazm!
So, it looks like the drain holes are clear. I ran a 1/4 inch dowel through them and it came back clean. Took another video and it seems like it's somehow bypassing the drain holes somewhat and running down the frame? |

So I determined it was just normal operation. Now if this happens at the car wash (it doesn't for me, I mean I think I wash my car weekly at home no issue), perhaps in your case, the sunroof is somehow not fully shut and let's in a lot of water instead of the usual smaller amount that it's designed for? At this point that is my only bet. Last edited by TheMidnightNarwhal; 09-28-2021 at 02:13 PM.. |

Kind of good to know I'm not the only one having this issue.
Can someone post a pic of how their seals look around the sunroof? I want to compare and see if there are any abnormal "gaps" on mine that would allow too much water in. Thanks!!! |

Actually as I type this, maybe it's my drains that are partially clogged in the wheel well area and the water just doesn't drains as fast which then makes it spill over. IIRC this never happened on my previous same car (2011 335is), and I had cleaned the drains with a lot of water preventively. |
