IPhone 3G with IDrive Bluetooth?

Time for an upgrade on my phone and was after some info on whether an IPhone 3G will pair with the car properly?

Car is a 2008 3 series saloon

My local dealer was not very sure when I asked him, other than to say it definitely works with the facelifted system!

I know there is no cradle available at the moment for the IPhone 3G, but hopefully will be soon?

Anyone had any experiences etc....does the Google Maps etc work properly?

Many thanks

Hi,

Yes the iPhone 3G will sync with your iDrive fine mate. There were problems with my last car (an 06 535d) which I would have needed a software update to cure, but my 2007 M3 works fine.

I had an original iPhone snap-in adaptor, which JUST about fits the 3G, so I'd just buy one of those instead (unless they are releasing a new 3G version soon?).

The iPhone will connect via bluetooth. If you want to play music from you iPhone, then you can;t use a snap-in adaptor anyway, as it only have power and antenna connections, not music.

If you have the USB adaptor, then just pulg it in using that and store it in the pounch (I use a 30Gb iPod classic for this and just use the iPhone for calls).

iPhone 3G in original cradle, iPod 30Gb in pouch connected to USB Adaptor

The pouch was already in the car (think it comes with the USB Interface option), but there was no Y-Lead, so got one of ebay. Just search BMW or MINI USB lead and there are plenty on-line.

Think the lead is c£40 from your dealer, but I'd definatly tap the sales rep up for one as part of the deal

I heard it was the revision of the bluetooth module itself that was causing the problems on earlier cars.

Software updates don't fix it as it's the profile used by your cars bluetooth that's not compatible with the phone.

Thankfully there's a fix for earlier cars (works perfectly in my '06 E90) that requires you to have greater than 3000 contacts in the phone.

I have a 3G iPhone and until today had no success getting the contacts to sync with I drive etc. Like many others.

However I have just upgraded the iPhone firmware to V2.2 and it's pairing with full sync of phonebook and working in full

I must add I cannot recommend this toy (I mean phone) enough. It really is the best gadget I have bought bar none. The hype for once is totally justifiable.

Glad to hear it's finally working well for you as well, Phil.

All the best.

We never did finalise a meet to test it on your car - Down to me been busy / tied up / not been ar$ed (delete as applicable)

Thanks again for the offer though.

It could have been an exclusive "Teesside Retail Park Meet" - lol

A bit like a southern meet, then?!

Unhappy iphone & iDrive

Hi

I have a BMW 330 Coupe (December 2006 model) with iDrive and I have been on the BMW website to see if there is anyway I can get my iPhone 3g to work the iDrive but to no avail. Do you know if there is a software upgrade for the iDrive that will enable me to use the iphone?

Thanks in advance!

You shouldn't have any problem with the bluetooth connection, making or receiving calls nor phonebook transfer, if you have the 2.2 firmware installed on the 3G, irrespective of the car's Progman version.

Hmmm.... I might try my iPhone in the wifes car again now people are having success with v2.2. Might also mean I'll have to buy her an iPhone though

Have any of you with the iphone ever had the problem that the music library on your iphone does not show up in the "external devices" listing of the auxilary inputs? On my '09 335i, the iPod feature works perfectly fine about 60% of the time, but 4 out of 10 times I plug it in, even though the car recognizes the iPhone as an external music player, when I select the device and try to search for an artist/album/genre, all the fields are blank and I can't play any music. Have any of you had the same problem??

Hi ya,

Are you using the BMW Y-Lead or the standard Apple USB lead? If you want to play protected music (purchased from the apple store) you need the Y-Lead.

Thanks, that would seem to make sense in that case but I am using the BMW provided y-lead and, furthermore, am not playing protected music.
