RWD FTW, agree on all their points. The G42 is too darn heavy for its size. I would never opt for the Xi, curious to see the specs for the RWD model next year.

Finally one of the "big" auto YouTube channels released a review on the M240! But of course, they had to compare it to the M2, while the M240 blows it away in a straight line (Cold wet track though) and has a better interior it sounds like the M2 is better in every other way. I wonder how the review would've gone if it wasn't a comparison? Or, How the upcoming RWD M240 will compare to the previous M2?
I think we all agree about the lack of 6MT, the rear styling (though it has grown on me in pics) and the weight being downsides. These cars should be 3-400lbs lighter, and maybe the RWD version will be closer? Not so sure since the M340i vs M340i xDrive are only about 105lbs difference. I can't believe that the M240 is only 6" shorter than the M340 but only ~5lbs lighter? Overall, I liked the review but came away feeling a bit less excited to get my car now. Not a big deal but how is the backseat smaller on the new, larger 2 series? I wonder if I should've purchased another M340? For those of you who already have your cars do you are with their review of the M240? Is the ride "busy" / a little stiff, etc?

G42 while competent should have been better executed. Weight is the fundamental killer of driving engagement and when I think of a small car I expect it to weigh in significantly less than the G20. G20 is a huge car by all measures, G42 is not.

Great review by the lads. I feel they were honest and of course know their stuff.
As expected the M240i performs very well even with the extra weight (especially off the line with xDrive); however, the M2 is more engaging (6MT), fun (RWD), and track-ready (lighter, stiffer suspension). Of course the new interior is much nicer, but I was surprised on the rear seat room (as I thought they were essentially identical). If you want upgraded tech & a year round ride, the M240i works for 95% of people. If you are a hardcore enthusiast that doesn't live where there's snow and/or own a winter beater, the OG M2 might be the better move. I wish they made a M2lite that's basically an OG M2 with a B58TU engine, updated tech, and interior color choices (unique options). To me that would be the best balance vs. the heavier S series engines with terrible fuel economy, etc. Here's my estimated rating system: |

Styling subjective of course but I cannot get over the G42, especially right next to a F87 - just bonkers design language between the triangle air ducts up front to the bizarre blend of smooth and hard edges at the rear. Such a more cohesive philosophy for the F87 IMO - even prefer the G22 / G80 / G82 design language to this. In the end, was willing to accept the weight penalty of the G20 to get this performance profile. All the same, really appreciated this review of (really, two gens separated) M2 vs M Performance.

If I were to ever get a 2er again it would be a M2C, there's just no comparison and the M2C is a great looking car |

Besides that, I believe that the width of the abilities of the S58 is beyond believe! As from the dig uptil red line it's strong, gutsy and is immediately 'scalable' to make it a perfect fit in every occasion. The S63 has this same universal capability. Both engines made me wonder, what's left to desire? Until today, I wouldn't really know. |

M2 should be better, the M240 is not a true M Car
that said, the M240xi is damn quick off the line... X drive really helps. And regarding weight vs the future RWD M240 I think may only be 150 lbs. Not a big deal when 99% of us will never race a M240. I like the stability and broad shoulders, looks aggressive & great tire & wheel choices Like these guys, they are entertaining and have fun!! |

I’m not sure (although I have my suspicions) why everybody is so defensive of the M2, I don’t want an M2, I have no use for it, I have never driven one of my own cars on a track, or got close to the cornering capabilities of any car on a road.
I want an “M lite” that can give me great performance on public roads in a country where roads are wet for a good proportion of the year. The fact the the M240i can out drag an M2 from a standing and rolling start is an added bonus though. |

Real BMW M is like the M2 shown in this video compare. Also M3, M4, M5. These all have higher output engines than their lower level brother the M240, the M340, the M440, the M540 and stiffer suspensions, larger brakes and wheels... I think you get the idea

A concise explanation was given by you. Many have no idea I feel lol. They are viewing this through a lens of useability in reference to daily life. Useful for daily yes, practical at times not so much. My M2 2017 was superb. I miss the car. If leaving my M235i and entering the M2 - the world changed and distinctly. Sound, feel, reaction etc. Some people need to stick with a Lexus or Mercedes lol. Ive had other more exotic machinery. The M2 was just a purposeful and aggressive friend which made me smile. |

If for some reason I don't like the G87. I will just get a manual GT86/FRS for weekend duty, the new Generation have improved tremendously or so I have heard.
