2006 320D ELV Issue + No OBD Connection
Hi,
I recently saw yellow steering wheel icon on screen and my car did not started. I jacked the car to a local BMW electronics repair shop. He tried to pull the error codes with ISTA & many alternatives. None of them is able to connect. All the screens etc working but car is not starting yellow Steering Whl. icon pops up. The repairman is trying to find suitable BCM to check if it works but it takes time. I see that there are experienced enthusiast here. I hope that someone can help. The things we checked so far: - Couln't check error codes since OBD connection fails. - Fuses are fine. - IBS is disconnected and connected. Nothing changes. - Battery is fine 12V. - The repairman said he tried to connect BCM and nothing so far. My car: 2006 320D E90 |

Is there 12 volts at the OBD connector?
You can get a K/D can cable and download diagnostics at the coding sub forum. Setting this up when the car is giving you trouble is not ideal. Aftermarket Tunes are known to make diagnostics not work on the Turbo Cars. A lot of tunes have a mode 0 that bypass the tune which will allow diagnositcs to work. Bimmergeeks cable and download would get you started. Diesels are not as well supported at this site because we didn't get them in anything but 6 cylinders and no 4 cylinders of any type in the US for the e9x series. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showt...&highlight=elv https://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=368 Last edited by ctuna; 01-31-2022 at 12:37 PM.. |

you will not be able to connect. When the ELV error counter maxes out, you can't boot up the car. You need either a new steering column with the updated ELV, or you need an ELV emulator. the emulator is likely the way to go, it's like $20, vs a steering column replacement, which is $2500.

I was able to connect to pc 15 days ago. That's why I do not think it is due to tune. Do you think is there a change it is due to ELV ?

The problem is, the car will not turn on. Like at all. No accessory, no ignition, no power, that means the modules do not get turned on either, and you can't connect to them. So with no power or way to force the ignition on, you're stuck. Either way he needs an new column or an ELV emulator, that is the root cause of the problem. I happened to luck out that the dealer had a steering column in stock, and the tech stayed late on a Saturday putting it in so I could drive home. That was a long ass day. |

that should not stop the diags from running as far as I know.
I had the yellow ELV thing and I could run diags and reset the ELV counter no problem. |

thanks for the answer. I will try to pull the car to another shop tomorrow and let them know to open the column and make sure lock is open before installing emulator. I guess there is not any choice other than disassembling the column and open the lock manually ?

You should be able to talk to the car through the OBD no matter what
as far as I know. Nothing should stop that except for no power on the OBD or bad connections to it . If ELV error has turned red the software counter for ELV error counter must be reset to zero. |

Go to basics 12 volts at the OBD connector follow the
signals back. If there are any special features that your country requires we can't help you with that. |
