6 year old tires?
So we went in for an alignment. Guy says tires are 6 years old. Probably 25k miles. I kind of agree but I am a miser. If so what do we like? I have G force Comp 2s on. Not bad. Your thoughts?

You kind of agree they’re six years old, or…? I’m a little confused about what your question is.
I would say most definitely do not replace them just because they’re six years old, if that’s what you’re asking. I’d look at overall condition (cracking, dried out, etc) if I was considering replacement due to age and not remaining tread life.

Sorry, he said I need new tires and I kind of agree.
Anyway, I went back in and took a closer look myself. They are about done, I also had a nail on the inner sidewall of a tire which partially prompted my visit. Getting the G Force comp 2s with alignment for $697 out the door. |

mine are 2011 tires, 50% wear.... Only used on winter, car always in garage, tires stored in the garage, good brand (toyo), no cracks. Summer car, I can even put 2-3 years on it before they hit 3/32 |

It really depends on their life and what youre expecting. Once the tires get exposed to heat and humidity they start aging, leeching out the oils and whatnot that makes them soft, they will start to harden. But the easier life (garaged, low heat/humidity environment, etc) the longer they last. Also depends on what you want out of them. They will harden but on cars its not AS bad as a bike.
If youre pushing the limits the limit comes quicker, etc. Otherwise seriously doubt youre gonna notice 6 years on them, I tend to take motorcycle tires 7 years before I worry unless you see/feel something. I wouldnt worry about car tires for a decade unless its a really harsh environment. |

I did not change my tires for 10 years. The tires were not dry rotted or cracked and only had 20K km. I was not running them hard but the rubber was starting to harden so I believe in inspecting your tires to decide if you need to changed them.

I agree. I got that lecture on my snows from Costco (long story I f'd up because their nitrogen pump will show an error if the psi is too low--I let air out figuring I would exchange it for nitrogen). Had to drive up to the garage to get my tire filled. Tech goes these are dangerous, they are from around 2008 (he was spot on).
Well heck I took the car to BMW for the PA state inspection and they have like 7/32" and BMW didn't say they're dangerous. My Pilot Super Sports are probably 6 y.o. and have only 2,000 miles on them. If I threw them out, I guarantee they end up for sale in W. Phila. Unless some physical defect, I wouldn't just go by 6 years. I learned they do the same with baby seats.... |

I drove on them for a few months until I got a nail in one of them, that's when I decided to just buy a new set though the tires still looked fine. |

The rubber compound can change over time with repeated heat cycles and environmental exposure. Tires are cheap compared to injury or vehicle damage when you lose grip at the worst possible time.
I've seen 12 year old tires that looked fine, and I've also seen 3 year old Michelins that were so dry rotted they looked like they belonged on an antique car. Your results may vary, but I personally wouldn't run tires that are 8 years old on something I drive in a spirited manner.
