Your ev & feed-in tariff

Interesting topic, just outlines how this country hasn’t got the infrastructure to supply 24hrs a day, and is probably going to get worse with more ev’s

EV's are good to help balance network, giving owners opportunity to earn some money on the way by buying cheap electricity and selling higher. My question is does iX3 even allow to draw energy out of battery or just only consumes.

The iX3 does not, as yet, support V2G. Converting DC back to AC requires an expensive inverter and, at the moment, there appears not to be a CCS standard. There is a V2G standard for EVs that use CHADeMO such as the Nissan Leaf.

Energy exported in the UK is paid for under the SEG scheme. DNOs will insist on some form of islanding or automatic disconnection from the Grid in the event of a Grid power failure.

It is very generous of them to pay owners 15p per kWh. If I want to buy that energy back, I am currently paying 22p per kWh. And that is likely to increase by 50% in April.

they will only do that at peak times when market prices for electricity are much higher.

I dont think you fully understand this. They are proposing to use EV's instead of peaker plants during times of max system demand (evenings). Peaker plants are usually gas turbines or large battery packs (google Tesla Megapack). They are expensive to build (batteries) or expensive to operate (gas turbines). I think it is a brilliant idea. Leverage the large amount of batteries in EV's to balance the grid. Also the batteries are distributed so no grid upgrades needed (Ugly HV lines to power plants).

We are having similar discussions in Ireland. It is a bigger issue here because of the huge amounts of data centres. Dublin is home to 25% of all data centres in Europe and consume a whopping 10% of our electricity. The solution currently being discussed here is to force data centres onto their backup generators when the grid is unbalanced, which isnt great for environmental reasons (diesel generators).

Even if you can just power your own house from your EV. Charge at cheap rate over night, drive to work and back and then use the remaining cheap electricity to power cooker, lights, to for the evening instead of using peak rate electricity, then over night re-charge! Boom.
