Port and Sherry

Anyone know anything about these?

I had a bottle of port decades ago and remember it being very salty. Perhaps a tawny port? Anyway, I want to try Port again, and Sherry, as after dinner drinks (digestives?).

Anyone drink these? Recommendations for a good one to try without breaking the bank?

Sherry for me as an aperitif. I stand to be corrected but Bristol Cream is the only one that can legally be called 'Sherry' just like Champagne must come from the origin location.

A Sherry-like product must be labeled 'Apera'.

I remember Harvey's Bristol Cream commercials around Christmastime every year. I should grab a bottle. Never tried it.

I used to run with a lot of Portugese and Brazilian coworkers.
My favorite was always Grahams 6 grapes port. $19/bottle and lasted quite a while.
I got away from NJ and havent seen my friends in a while but maybe Ill grab a bottle, thanks 2000cs

Personally, for starting out with Port, I don't think you can go wrong with Taylor Fladgate 10 or ideally, their 20 year old Port.
They are quite sweet, full body taste, just don't pour the sediment into your glass. Great with dark chocolate or nuts for dessert.
I also find it's great for sautee mushrooms.

I was also gonna mention Taylor Fladgate...their stuff is real tasty. I bought my parents a 40yr and it was amazing. Sandeman is one I have not tried but its been around since the late 1700's. They make port, sherry, maeira & brandy. If you can find em give em a try

I've enjoyed Zinfandel ports. They stay on the sweeter side, which I find nice with after meals. Add in a smooth cheese, mhhhh

Somebody (on here?) recommended Terra d'Oro. They ship to a lot of places, and you can pick up a bunch of different ports in the $20 range, to establish what you might or might not like.

White Port or Chardonnay Port is a fun sip in the summer if you can find them. Luckily I live in wine county so I can find it!

Definitely give Madeira a try too. I prefer it over port- kinda similar difference in taste to grape vs raisin. Plus it has an interesting backstory:

Quote:
The islands of Madeira have a long winemaking history, dating back to the Age of Exploration (approximately from the end of the 15th century) when Madeira was a standard port of call for ships heading to the New World or East Indies. To prevent the wine from spoiling, neutral grape spirits were added. On the long sea voyages, the wines would be exposed to excessive heat and movement which transformed the flavour of the wine. This was discovered by the wine producers of Madeira when an unsold shipment of wine returned to the islands after a round trip.
